Big Green sports teams in competition this weekend

Although much of the excitement of Homecoming weekend is directed toward the football game against Columbia, there are several other events to keep sports fans entertained long after the final whistle at Memorial Field. Although tradition and public awareness dictate that football be at the heart of every Homecoming, three other Big Green teams will take on Columbia this weekend and two -- men's tennis and women's lacrosse -- will play host to a handful of colleges in the Big Green Invitational. Despite playing out of the spotlight, the four teams that have begun their seasons so far have turned in top-notch performances and one -- women's lacrosse -- will kick off its season with a four team tournament. Although these teams normally play in front of smaller crowds, they all represent the pride of Big Green on their respective playing fields, and a large crowd of supportive fans will certainly help all five teams continue -- or kick off -- their seasons in a winning fashion. By sheer size, the Big Green Invitational, hosted by the Dartmouth men's tennis team, will be the biggest event of the weekend.

Rolling ladies' hoops team takes to the road for Ivy play

They had me worried there for a while. After starting the much anticipated season 5-1, the Dartmouth women's basketball team went into an impressive slump, dropping eight of the next nine games, a five-game losing streak included. In what was supposed to be a "Return-to-Greatness" season for the Big Green, it seemed that, for the first time in the school's history, the team would suffer its third consecutive season with a losing record. Following a 74-60 loss to Providence College on Jan.

Women ballers open season

The waiting is over. After consecutive losing seasons-- Dartmouth's first back-to-back campaigns under .500 in its 17 seasons with head coach Chris Wielgus -- the Big Green women's basketball team is ready to attempt a return to their tradition of excellence. The Big Green, which won 13 Ivy League championships between 1980 and 2000, spent the last two seasons in mediocrity while rebuilding its roster.

Women's soccer battling Penn for Ivy title at home

While the end of the regular season means the end of the year -- and a farewell party for the seniors -- for hundreds of women's college soccer teams around the nation, Dartmouth faces a different kind of a game in its regular-season finale against University of Pennsylvania on Saturday. With a victory against Penn (6-6-3 overall, 2-1-3 Ivy League), the Dartmouth women's soccer team, standing 12-3-1 overall and 5-1-0 among the Ancient Eight, has a chance to win the Ivy League crown, which it would share with the Princeton Tigers (13-2-0 overall, 6-1-0 Ivy League) who have already clinched at least a share of the title. Penn has allowed an average of 1.76 goals per game and its goalies have stopped only 71.1 percent of shots on goal. Penn's offense, however, has been strong throughout the season, led by the stellar performance of sophomore Katy Cross, who has a commanding lead on the Ivy League scoring chart with 13 goals and 30 points in 14 games. This is a repeat performance of last year's incredible rookie season for Cross, leading the Ivy League in points (34), goals (12) and assists (10) in the 2001 campaign, all three marks a school single-season record.

Sox Disappoint in AL, A's Look Golden

Following a truly exciting World Series and a tumultuous off-season that threatened to contract two teams, it was more of the same in the American League East marked by absolute mediocrity of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, absolute disappointment of the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees splurging on overpaid talents to win another division title. In all fairness to the Yankees, their high-price acquisitions, such as Raul Mondesi, Rondell White and John Vander Wal, were far less than scintillating.
