Women's tennis starting strong

The Big Green women's tennis team got off to an impressive start to its 2003-2004 campaign by posting a pair of excellent performances at the Volkl Shootout and the Quinnipiac Invitational. The season-opening Volkl Shootout took place at Dartmouth on September 19-21 and featured Boston University, Brown, Colgate and the University of Connecticut in addition to the Big Green.

Wille out; Rittgers in at QB

|

After the Big Green football team's 42-17 loss to New Hampshire in last Saturday's Granite Bowl, Dartmouth co-captain Casey Cramer '04 said, "The way the team is going to approach it is that next Saturday starts a new season." At the time, the all-American tight end had no idea how truly he had spoken. When Dartmouth (0-2, 0-0 Ivy) heads in to action against Pennsylvania (2-0, 0-0 Ivy) tomorrow at Memorial Field, in both teams' Ivy League opener, it will be without former starting quarterback Scott Wille '04.

Volleyball falls to .500 with loss to Central Conn. State

|

Capitalizing on big leads and closing out sets have definitely been problems for Dartmouth volleyball (6-6) throughout this young season. There was no finer example of this struggle than Tuesday night's crushing five-set, non-conference loss (30-27, 30-25, 27-30, 29-31, 11-15) to the 13-2 Blue Devils of Central Connecticut State at Leede Arena. After Dartmouth claimed the first two sets, the Blue Devils came roaring back into the match, stepping up their defense, cutting down on errors, and improving their attack, as outside hitter Chantelle Bowden put down powerful kill after powerful kill, tallying a game-high 23 for the match. Said Dartmouth outside hitter Sarah Nadler '06, who led the team with 18 kills at a .421 hitting percentage to go along with 20 digs, "We were so close.

Volleyball falls to Wildcats, 3-0

|

In the first volleyball match ever to be broadcast on radio in New Hampshire, the Big Green women's volleyball team (5-3, 0-0 Ivy) only came up short on the scoreboard. In a Tuesday night intrastate battle, the team fell to the Wildcats of the University of New Hampshire (6-9) in straight sets (19-30, 31-33, 18-30) at Lundholm Gymnasium. Shorthanded from the start with an injury to powerful right side Anna Jenkins '05, and facing what was probably the most skilled and intimidating competition they will encounter all season, the Big Green's performance was not accurately represented by the final score. "We played the best volleyball in the second half of the first game and the second game that we've played all season," said opposite Lindsay Sheffield '04, who had a monster game, leading the team with 11 kills, at a .348 hitting percentage, and 6 blocks. "What hurt us in the long run was just a couple of points that got away due to lack of communication.

After trial by fire, football looks to fire back at UNH

|

With new starters at several positions, including quarterback, running back and punter, the Big Green football team would have benefited from an opening game against a mediocre opponent, against whom Dartmouth could work out the kinks, while the new starters could settle into their roles en route to a Big Green victory. Instead, Dartmouth got a trial by fire against the Colgate Raiders, ranked 25th in Division I-AA and fresh off a 38-15 win over Division I-A Buffalo.

Big Green football picked to finish 4th in preseason poll

|

As the 2003 Ivy League football season draws nearer and observers of the Ancient Eight begin to predict what the coming season holds in store, one thing is certain when it comes to Dartmouth: the slogan for the Big Green's 2003 campaign, "Legacy Reborn," is more than just talk. At Ivy League Media Day, held on August 11 at the Yale Golf Course, the preseason media poll was released, and Dartmouth was picked to finish fourth, despite being one of only two Ivy teams not to return a starting quarterback from the 2002 season. In addressing the media gathered in New Haven, Dartmouth head coach John Lyons acknowledged that replacing Brian Mann '02, the Ivy League's total offense leader in 2002, will be a key to the Big Green's success this season, but expressed a great deal of confidence in projected starter Scott Wille '04.
