In big league baseball, Remlinger '88 is quite a relief

Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of articles profiling Dartmouth alumni in professional sports. For Mike Remlinger '88, a road trip to New York used to mean taking the mound at Andy Coakely Field, a 300-seat venue tucked away in a corner of Columbia's Baker Field Athletic Complex. Just over 15 years later, as another generation of Dartmouth baseball players prepares to make the trip to Coakely Field, Remlinger puts on his Chicago Cubs uniform in the visitors' clubhouse at Shea Stadium, preparing to take the mound against the New York Mets in front of 17,244 fans. As far as he's come, however, Remlinger doesn't make much of the contrast.

Men's golf takes eighth-place finish

The Dartmouth men's golf team finished eighth at the New England Championship that concluded Sunday, March 13. The Big Green opened the tournament with 312 and then improved to 306 for a 36-hole total of 618. Kenan Yount '06 earned a top-15 finish, leading Dartmouth with 76-74 -- 150 on the par 72 Triggs Memorial golf course. "This fall I wasn't performing as well as I would have liked, but now I'm hitting the ball a lot farther and straighter," Yount said, "which has really helped me gain some more confidence and patience on the course." Dartmouth's other standout freshman, Chaki Kobayashi, was just two strokes behind Yount with a strong showing of 78-76 -- 152. Captain Jero Esteve '03 scored 80-76 -- 156, Mark Christman '06 fired 80-80 -- 160; and Stephen Gruber '05 walked away with 78-85 -- 163. "After not playing real golf for like, four months, I think we played pretty well.

Track and field excels at UNH and Miami

The Dartmouth men's track and field team competed at two venues this past weekend. Many athletes traveled to Durham, N.H., to compete in the Outdoor Invitational hosted by the University of New Hampshire, while others went down to Miami University in Florida to enjoy fast times in great weather. Nearby at the UNH Invitational, four men's field athletes won their respective events, bringing the Big Green to a first place finish.

The tri-meet with Harvard and Brown last weekend was cancelled, but some of Dartmouth's track and field athletes went to Princeton instead to compete in the Sam Howell Invitational. Six athletes from the men's and women's teams took first in their events, with athletes from Princeton, Rutgers and The College of New Jersey making an appearance. For the men's team, the strongest showing was in the field events.

2003 World Series prediction: Oakland over St. Louis

It's spring, so that can only mean one thing -- the start of the Major League Baseball season. Here is a rundown of the top contenders to make the 2003 World Series. Anaheim Angels I'll start with the defending champs (yes, you weren't dreaming last fall, the Angels actually did win the World Series). Anaheim may have been the least active team in all of baseball this off-season, as it was content to retain the entirety of its lineup from last year's squad. Why mess with a good thing, right?

Sailors persist in tough weather

It has been said that Mother Nature can be especially tricky in New England. Who can disagree after we were briefly teased with sunshine and a dry, somewhat grassy Green, only to have a foot of snow dumped on us in recent days?

Women's water polo trying for repeat title

The Dartmouth women's water polo team (7-1-0) is looking to capture the latter half of back-to-back New England championships after crucial victories this past weekend over MIT, Wellesley, Bates and Boston University. While the team is not entering the New England Championships with an undefeated mark in seeding tournaments as it did last year, the recent play of the women has left other teams searching frantically for a counterattack to the seemingly unrelenting offensive Dartmouth blitzes. Facing Yale in the first seeding tournament, the women were shorthanded five key contributors including All-New England goalie Gillian Morshedi '04 due to both the D-Plan and the concurrent conclusion of the swim season.

Clayton and Olsen placed second within their classes at the regional competition to qualify for next Saturday's Zones. "I was thrilled with the performance of our two Dartmouth Equestrian members that advanced on to the Zone finals," coach Sally Batton said. "Clayton put in one of her best Open Fences rounds this entire year, and it earned her a spot at the Zones.
