W. laxers gear up for NCAA opener

EMI ITO / The Dartmouth Staff In its fourth consecutive NCAA appearance, the seventh-seeded Dartmouth women's lacrosse team will take on rival Boston University in the first round of competition on Sunday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field. With this year's selection, Dartmouth, an NCAA semifinalist in 2005, will make its eighth trip in nine years and 11th appearance in program history to the big dance. After starting the season as the third-ranked team in the nation, Dartmouth's road to the NCAA tournament turned out to be a rough ride for the women in green. The team suffered a devastating 11-10 overtime loss to then No.

After jumping out to an 8-3 halftime lead, Pain Train could not stave off Brownian Motion's furious second-half comeback, as the Dartmouth team fell 16-14.

Pain Train derailed, Princess perfect at ultimate regionals

|

Chris Takeuchi / The Dartmouth Staff The best ultimate frisbee teams in the Northeast converged in Hanover last weekend to play in the 2006 Ultimate Players Association College Regional Championship, a two-day tourney that qualified the top two teams to play in the impending national tournament. Tufts bounced the Pain Train, the men's squad, in the semifinals on double game point. Princess Layout, Dartmouth's women's team, soundly defeated all who stood in its way, winning the region and a bid to the national tournament. The women came into the tournament as the top seed in the women's division and lived up to expectations, winning games against Colby, Vermont and MIT by fair margins before defeating Tufts, 13-10. Dartmouth thrived on the strong play and leadership of its co-captains, Liz Middleton '06 and Lakshmi Narayan '06, as well as solid efforts from several of its younger members, a good sign for Dartmouth's future on the ultimate field. "Our team has worked really hard all season." Lydia Islan '08 said, "So, it was really great to see us come together and show everyone what we can do." Tufts defeated MIT in the loser's bracket game, 15-9, to go on to take the second bid to the national tournament. The Pain Train came into regionals as the eighth seed, but results at earlier tournaments had shown all of the top teams in the region to be vulnerable, leaving the two bids to nationals relatively wide open.

Football treats fans to 2006 preview in annual scrimmage

The white squad's bend-but-don't-break defense kept the green out of the end zone in the waning moments of the annual Green/White intrasquad football scrimmage at Memorial Field on Saturday morning, leaving the white with a 21-14 victory in the team's final action of the spring. With the game tied at 14 late in the fourth quarter, Josh Cohen '09, who assumed the starting quarterback spot in the latter part of the fall season, drove the white team to a quick score and the lead.

Softball wraps up encouraging season with third-place Ivy finish

|

Rain Tuesday morning led to the cancellation of the last softball game of the season -- a fitting end for a season marked by unexpected events. The Big Green's spring season was plagued by injuries, had surprising wins and disappointing losses, all en route to a satisfying third place Ivy League finish and a 14-22 overall record. The season started very slowly for the team.

Boston College blasts baseball with five-run eighth inning

Sarah Shaw / The Dartmouth Staff In a year in which early season non-conferences losses turned into a deep division title run and a roster defined by youth took a leading role in its success, the Dartmouth baseball team closed out its regular season with a disappointing loss to Boston College, 9-6, on Thursday afternoon in Hanover.
