New lightweight coach brings impressive resume

With three national titles, five Ivy League titles and two EAWRC coach of the year awards already under his belt, Cornell crew coach Dan Roock decided it was time to take a "few years" off from coaching full time. After only a one-year hiatus, however, Roock has returned to coaching Ivy League crew, and will now lead the Dartmouth lightweight squad. "I was going to take a couple years off, but decided to jump at the job, because Dartmouth is such a good place to coach rowing," Roock said. Roock, who himself has the same number of national titles as Dartmouth does Ivy League titles in lightweight crew, graduated from Princeton in 1981 where, as a senior, his teammates awarded him the Lyman W.

Strong offense sparks volleyball to victory in league opener

Coming off three non-league home games, the Big Green (5-6, 1-0 Ivy) hit the road to square off against last year's fourth-place finisher in the Ivy League. "We had a great week of practice and were really excited to start Ivy play," co-captain Megan MacGregor '10 said.

Rugby dominates Yale in first home Ivy League matchup

Curie Kim / The Dartmouth Brophy Field played host to its first ever Ivy League match on Saturday, as host Dartmouth men's rugby trounced Yale, 62-8. Dartmouth (3-0, 3-0 Ivy) jumped out to an early 21-0 lead on tries by Tommy Brothers '11, Derek Fish '12 and Will Lehmann '12. "Really, our goal from the beginning and right before we started the game was to come out fast, get our systems going," Tay Stevenson '10 said.

/ The Dartmouth Staff Kevin Xiao / The Dartmouth At the Big Green's traditionally lopsided matchup against the University of New Hampshire this weekend, Dartmouth managed to stay competitive throughout the first half this weekend, but succumbed to major errors in the third quarter, allowing the Wildcats to pounce on a 44-14 win. The Big Green (0-2, 0-0 Ivy) kept the score close for the majority of the game, going into halftime down by just six points.

Field hockey falls at hands of Princeton, Boston University

Sarah Irving / The Dartmouth Staff The Big Green field hockey team opened its Ivy League season with a 6-1 loss at home to Princeton Saturday before falling 1-0 to Boston University on Sunday in Hanover. Rebecca Sobel '11 scored her sixth goal of the season to avoid a shutout by the Tigers (5-1, 1-0 Ivy). Dartmouth (1-4, 0-1 Ivy) walked onto the field with a particular game plan to deal with the Princeton powerhouse, but the team still started off slowly, Sobel said. "It took us a while to get into our rhythm," she said. Princeton, meanwhile, showed ferocity right from the opening whistle.
