Sailing continues to add to win totals as it preps for ACCs

The Dartmouth women's and coed sailing teams both posted strong finishes at three separate regattas this weekend.

The No. 16 coed team posted an eighth-place finish at the Sherman Hoyt Trophy and a first-place finish at the Oberg Trophy.

The No. 8 women's team, meanwhile, won the Stu Nelson Women's Trophy at Connecticut College in New London, Conn.

The eighth place finish at the Hoyt Trophy event, hosted by Brown in Providence, R.I., was a particularly encouraging sign for the Big Green, as the team finished in sixth among members of the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association.

Dartmouth must finish in the top six among NEISA teams at Schell Trophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this weekend to qualify for the coed Atlantic Coast Championships, Sam Williams '12 said.

"[The Hoyt Trophy] is another event this fall in which we showed huge improvement from last year, when we placed 17th," Williams said. "It was also very promising that we were the sixth NEISA team at this event."

Williams, Sarah Freihofer '10 and Peter Hughes '11 finished 10th in the A division at Brown, while Matt Cohen '10, Ali Hiller '11 and Sam Andrew '11 finished 12th in the B division.

Yale, which is ranked No. 1 overall in the nation, won the event, marking its fifth victory in the past seven weeks. Boston College came in second, while the College of Charleston finished a close third.

On Saturday, a storm raged through Providence, R.I., and made sailing conditions very difficult. Sunday proved to be a different story, as the stormy weather had passed, and the team fared much better.

Dartmouth also posted strong performances at The Oberg Trophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The team was able to win this event behind strong performances from Bernie Roesler '12 and Rocky Merchant '12, who finished second in the A division, Ed Jude Glackin '11 and Matt Habig '13, who finished third in the B division, and Ben Bier '10 and Heidi Heller '10, who took a second-place finish in the C division.

"This was another huge win for us," Roesler said. "We're gaining some momentum for the ACCs. We're definitely excited right now."

Dartmouth finished 15 points ahead of second-place Salve Regina University. The University of Vermont finished a distant third.

The women's sailing team won the Stu Nelson Women's Trophy at Connecticut College this past weekend, and once again highlighted its strength.

Becca Dellenbaugh '10 and Rachel Moncton '12 finished first in the A division and led the team to the overall victory. Chandler Salisbury '13 and Steph Gagnon '10 were fourth in the B division, scoring 93 points.

The Big Green beat out Harvard, the second-place finisher, by nine points. Hobart and William Smith Colleges finished third.

"Everyone went out this weekend and successfully did their part," Williams said.

Next weekend, the coed sailing team will travel to Boston University to compete in the Nickerson Trophy and to MIT to take part in the Schell Trophy. The Women's team will travel to Cambridge, Mass., to compete in the Women's Urn Trophy.
