Soccer finds a win over New Hampshire with own goal

CHRISTOPHER RHOADES / The Dartmouth An early own goal helped end the Dartmouth men's soccer team's three-game losing streak, as the Big Green defeated the University of New Hampshire (9-6-2, 6-0-1 America East) 1-0 on Tuesday in Durham, N.H. A deflection off a shot taken by co-captain Dan Keat '10 in the seventh minute was enough for Dartmouth (9-5-1, 3-2-0 Ivy) to hold on to a victory, in a match that saw the Wildcats outshoot the Big Green, 12-10. The game also marked the third shutout of the season for rookie goalie Sean Donovan '13.

Football looks for second Ivy win against Cornell Saturday

AKIKAZU ONDA / The Dartmouth Staff After a disappointing 42-21 loss to Harvard last weekend, the Dartmouth football team returns home this weekend to face Ivy League foe Cornell in an important league game with Ivy standing implications. Both teams are currently tied for fifth in the Ivy League, along with Princeton and Columbia.

Field hockey defeats Harvard 5-3, Hood '12 breaks record

The Dartmouth field hockey team extended its winning streak to three with a 5-3 win over Harvard (5-10, 2-4 Ivy) Saturday, a game that saw Kelly Hood '12 break the College record for most points in a season. Captain Virginia Peisch '11 said she was satisfied with the team's play, but noted that the Big Green (9-7, 4-2 Ivy) did not play as well as it had against the University of Massachusetts. "We weren't as consistent," Peisch said. Head coach Amy Fowler noted, however, that a win is a win. "We did what we needed to do," she said. The Big Green offense had a strong showing against the Crimson, with five different players scoring goals. Fowler said that the offense carried over its domination of the midfield from last Wednesday's game against Massachusetts. "We had a balanced attack and continued scoring from the field," Fowler said. The first half saw multiple goals from both teams.

Cross country teams place well at Heps, look to regionals

Facing off against all seven of its Ivy League foes, Dartmouth's men's and women's cross country teams posted third and sixth place finishes, respectively, at the 2009 Heptagonal Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in New York on Friday. On the men's side, the Big Green finished with 90 points, placing third behind Columbia and Princeton, who netted 60 and 61 points, respectively.

Volleyball snaps five-game losing streak over weekend

"I think we came out with a lot of fire this weekend," co-captain Morgan Covington '10 said.

Schwieger '12 out for the season

AKIKAZU ONDA / The Dartmouth Staff The Dartmouth football team followed up last week's win over Columbia with a 42-21 loss to Harvard yesterday in Cambridge, Mass. Nick Schwieger '12, who rushed for 242 yards against Columbia, left the game early in the second quarter with a broken hand after just 10 carries for 18 yards. Schwieger is out for the season and "may require surgery," co-captain Pete Pidermann '10 said in an interview with The Dartmouth on Sunday. With the victory, Harvard (5-2, 4-0 Ivy) maintained its perfect Ivy League record, while the Big Green (1-6, 1-3 Ivy) still sits in a four-way te at the bottom of the league's standings. Wide receiver Tanner Scott '11 racked up seven receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown, but the Crimson's offense was too strong for Dartmouth to handle. Although the Big Green's defense struggled, Scott said that the offense did not contribute enough either. "We didn't help out our defense enough on offense, and we couldn't sustain a drive until the end of the second quarter," he said.

Basketball teams warm up for winter: Men's basketball

Entering the 2009-2010 season, the Dartmouth men's basketball team faces a challenge in replacing star forward Alex Barnett '09, who averaged 19.4 points per game last season to lead the Ivy League. "It's going to take multiple guys, if not everybody from the team, to step up and improve a lot of things from last year," guard Marlon Sanders '09 said. Barnett led the team in points, rebounds and assists last season, and was named the 2009 Ivy League Player of the Year and was an honorable mention on the All-America team. The Big Green finished 9-19 (7-7 Ivy) last season, tied for fourth in the Ivy League The team's 7-7 record in conference play was its best since head coach Terry Dunn's first season in 2004-2005.

Women's soccer loses heartbreaker to Crimson, 2-1

ZACH INGBRETSEN / The Dartmouth Staff The women's soccer team fell at the hands of Harvard on Saturday, losing 2-1 in Cambridge, Mass. Harvard (8-6-1, 5-1 Ivy) scored the game-winning goal, which broke a 1-1 tie, with less than four minutes to play. The opening minutes of the game were controlled by Dartmouth (8-7, 3-3 Ivy), with multiple players getting shooting opportunities. Aly O'Dea '12 scored an early goal in the seventh minute to put Dartmouth up 1-0.

Men's hockey squanders early lead

EUNICE LEE / The Dartmouth College President Jim Yong Kim and his son, Thomas, dropped the ceremonial first puck to start the 2009-2010 season of Big Green men's hockey this Friday night in Hanover. Dartmouth (0-1, 0-1 ECAC Hockey) fell to Harvard (1-0, 1-0 ECAC Hockey) 5-3 in the charged season opener, though the Big Green outshot the Crimson 44-28. "There are a lot of guys lying on the ice, fighting for the pucks it is a very physical game," head coach Bob Gaudet said.

Football to face defending Ivy champ. in Cambridge

ZACH INGBRETSEN / The Dartmouth Staff Coming off its best performance of the season, the Dartmouth football team will travel to Cambridge, Mass., this weekend to take on the reigining Ivy League champion, Harvard, and attempt to string two wins together for the first time since 2003. The game will be the 112th meeting between the two teams, with Harvard leading the all-time series, 62-45-5. Dartmouth and Harvard squared off in a closed scrimmage earlier this year on Sept.
