/ The Dartmouth Staff While a home crowd of family members, friends and fans provides support and comfort for competing Dartmouth athletes, road trips equally shape Big Green athletes' experiences, compelling them to bond with their teammates and otherwise acclimate to a less-than-encouraging rival environment. When teams like basketball, tennis, squash and track and field go on the road, they share experiences that help bring them together, both on and off the court. The men's basketball team generally begins its trips the day prior to the game, grabbing last-minute snacks from the Courtyard Cafe before heading onto the bus.

Connected to College, local athletes often stay near home

While many students consider Hanover home by the time they graduate, the area was already home for the student athletes who grew up in New Hampshire and Vermont and chose to attend Dartmouth due to its athletic and academic programs. Golf player Peter Williamson '12 who attended Hanover High School and lives approximately a mile from the College said that he followed Dartmouth athletics before he chose to attend, and was able to visit campus on a daily basis growing up. Williamson said he primarily wanted to come to Dartmouth for its academics, adding that he hoped to improve the College's golf team. "Dartmouth doesn't promote the best golf atmosphere," Williamson, who is currently studying in Thailand on an off-campus program, said in an e-mail to The Dartmouth.

Against ECAC foes, men's hockey picks up crucial points

Patton Lowenstein / The Dartmouth Staff The 18th-ranked Dartmouth men's ice hockey team played host to Cornell University and Colgate University this weekend at Thompson Arena, tying the Big Red (9-9-3, 7-5-2 ECAC), 2-2, on Friday night and besting the Raiders (3-21-2, 0-12-2 ECAC), 7-3, on Saturday. The Big Green (12-6-3, 8-4-2 ECAC) generated several offensive opportunities against the Big Red in the first period, but Dartmouth could not find an answer to Cornell freshman goalie Andy Iles. Although neither team was able to send the puck to the back of the net in the first period, the Big Green clearly held the momentum in what was a back-and-forth contest. Dartmouth got on the board first when Rob Smith '10 picked up a loose puck at center ice and skated in on Iles.
