Through the Lens of Lentz

|

I still have absolutely nothing to write about. It's been almost a year of me and this absurdly poor-titled column, and yet I still do not have much for you. As usual, I think about what people who get paid to write about sports usually write about at this time of year.

Football loses nailbiter, 24-21

|

Aki Onda / The Dartmouth Senior Staff The stage seemed to be set: A 2-0 Dartmouth team would take on the University of Pennsylvania, the two-time defending Ivy League champion, in the program's first-ever night game this Saturday, Oct.

Curious Jorge?

You walk outside and feel a slap across the face. Slightly stunned, you stumble backwards for a bit, spilling some of the $5.25 coffee you just bought.

With two late goals and a win, men's soccer shows its mettle

|

Zach Kuster / The Dartmouth Staff Playing before packed stands at Burnham Field on Saturday night, the Dartmouth men's soccer team used two late goals for a thrilling 2-1 comeback against the University of Massachusetts. The Big Green (2-3-2) set out to work on defense and to play better as a unit this week in practice.

Volleyball prevails in close matchup, continuing early success

|

Following its largely successful preseason run, the Dartmouth women's volleyball team opened Ivy League play with a closely-contested 3-2 win over Harvard University on Saturday, marking the team's fifth straight win over the Crimson (7-4, 0-1 Ivy). While co-captain Annie Villanueva '12 said the win did not necessarily showcase the Big Green's finest effort, she expressed satisfaction with the team's display of patience and discipline in the win. "It was really intense back and forth play, but I really trusted that we were going to win," Villanueva said. Co-captain Amber Bryant '12 agreed, calling the game a "grind" in spite of her belief that the Big Green could conquer the Crimson. The Big Green (9-3, 1-0 Ivy) jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the first set, but Harvard stormed to take a 20-19 lead of its own.

Tennis plays solidly in full weekend of action

|

The Dartmouth men's and women's tennis teams were both in action this weekend, with the men's team in New York participating in the USTA Billie Jean King NTC Men's College Invitational, while the women's team was in Providence, R.I., at the Brown Invitational. The men's team found success in singles play, with five Big Green athletes advancing to the semi-finals and three of those players qualifying for the finals. "I thought we did really well," Christopher Ho '12 said.

One-on-One

Four years ago, I sat down with Nick Pappas '12 to discuss coming from Phoenix, Ariz., to Dartmouth, and what it was like to be a freshman on a successful Division I team.

Hollisto's World

|

Hello Dartmouth, welcome back to my world. I definitely didn't forget about sports while I was grinding away at a "real" job over the summer, and I hope you didn't forget about me during my summer hiatus. You might have heard that lockout talks between the NBA Players Association and the league's owners have stalled, and that the odds of seeing a full season of NBA basketball this year are similar to the odds of Megan Fox winning an Oscar.

Women's soccer shows positive ahead of Ivy League play

|

Patton Lowenstein / The Dartmouth Staff After losing three of its first four games against difficult non-conference competition, the Dartmouth women's soccer team rebounded with strong performances but failed to fully capitalize against Boston College, the University of Maine and Colgate University last weekend. First-year head coach Theresa Wagner has brought a "winning mentality" to the Big Green, co-captain Kim Rose '13 said. "Having Theresa as a coach has been such a positive influence on our team," Rose said.

With convincing win, football starts season where it left off

|

With two blocked kicks and a big day on the ground from Nick Schwieger '12, the Dartmouth football team started its 2011 season in impressive fashion, recording a 37-20 win over Colgate University at Memorial Field on Saturday. Dartmouth (1-0) rode a ruthlessly efficient game to victory, finishing with 258 rushing yards on 39 carries. Schwieger led the team with 175 yards, pushing his career total to 2,015 and making him the second Big Green running back to surpass 2,000 yards in his career.
