Volleyball team falls to Lions before dominating Cornell

|

Dani Wang / The Dartmouth Staff The Dartmouth women's volleyball team split two games against Ivy League opponents this weekend, losing on Friday night to Columbia University before beating Cornell University on Saturday. Despite an initial two-set lead over Columbia (11-6, 5-2 Ivy), which had won seven of eight games heading into the matchup, the Big Green lost its momentum in the following two sets. "Our passing and digging fell apart, and we weren't as strong as we were in the first and second game," Madeline Baird '12 said. Dartmouth would not recover as Columbia went on to win the fifth and final set. When Dartmouth took an 8-5 lead in the set, Columbia called a strategic timeout and returned to win five of the next seven points.

After going undefeated against all your Ivy League opponents so far, what is the attitude on the team now? JC: I just want to start this interview by thanking the fans.

The Dartmouth men's and women's tennis teams competed in two separate tournaments over the weekend, honing their skills in preparation for dual matches later in the season. The men's tennis team hosted Division III schools Williams College and Middlebury College in the Dartmouth Shootout, giving the Big Green a chance to test itself against two competitive opponents. Dartmouth rose to its Division I reputation, however, finishing the weekend a combined 13-4 in singles and 5-3 in doubles play.

Cross country displays depth at weekend meet

After running to disappointing results at the Paul Short Invitational on Oct. 3, the Dartmouth men's and women's cross country teams made great strides in Saturday's New England Championships at Boston's Franklin Park. The men's top seven runners and the women's top five runners used the weekend to rest for the NCAA Pre-Championship meet next Sunday in Terre Haute, Ind., allowing other runners to assert themselves and battle for precious spots in later races this fall. The men's team failed to defend its victory in last year's meet, but still ran to a respectable second-place finish in the 43-team field, finishing with 192 points.
