It's All Up to the Players

Can any of us remember when steroids were not the major topic of any baseball conversation? It has been a while since the grand jury testimonies of Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi were leaked to the public, and even longer since I first wrote a column about the steroid scandal.

As Columbia University considers allowing the Reserve Officer Training Corps to finally return to campus after being banned during the Vietnam War, Dartmouth's Army ROTC program continues to struggle for scholarship funds, resources and support.

(Un)separating the trustee candidates

To the Editor: "Wright Comments on Zete Derecognition" incorrectly (and in my view, unfairly) separates the views of two alumni candidates from the rest of the candidates in the ongoing Board of Trustees election (May 4). The article begins by immediately creating a distinction between the current administration (namely, President Wright) and two of the trustee candidates, Todd Zywicki '88 and Peter Robinson '79.

SA considers scholarship office reforms

Student Assembly tackled reformation of the Scholarship Office and the pending revision of the hot button "Good Samaritan" policy on Tuesday night, but could not vote on resolutions because too few members appeared at the meeting. David Hankins '05, Jim Baehr '05 and Julia Hecht '08 presented a proposal that will be sent to Dean of Faculty Carol Folt and Dean of the College James Larimore for the revision of the Scholarship Office.

Playing with the Numbers

To the Editor: I was surprised to hear the statistic cited in Jen Garfinkel's article ("Grabowski lectures on sexuality, Catholic doctrine," May 2) that "family planning" was 98 percent effective against unwanted pregnancies, compared with 92 percent for oral contraceptives and 80 percent for condoms. If one examines the current publication from the World Health Organization about the failure rates of various birth control methods, one can see how Grabowski manipulates his numbers.

Maybe a Budget Director, Instead...

To the Editor: I'm shaking my head in despair over the news that Dartmouth is hiring a "Sustainability Director." I would hope that, with students unable to be certain of their living arrangements or of their ability to take needed courses, the College would prioritize its spending in a more intelligent manner.

Wright comments on Zete derecognition

College President James Wright defended the derecognition of Zeta Psi fraternity in an interview with The Dartmouth, even as petition candidates Peter Robinson '79 and Todd Zywicki '88 have used the issue in their trustee campaigns. At the heart of the controversy surrounding Zete's derecognition lies a delicate balance between free speech and holding Dartmouth students responsible for harassment.

Worthy of Fair Debate

To the Editor, In his op-ed ("Worthy of Debate," May 2), Jonathan Wisniewski, a conservative, asks us to take conservative arguments seriously and debate issues instead of simply taking the "liberal" line.

Women's rugby club ramshackles Army by 50 points

The Dartmouth women's rugby club took on Army this weekend for the second time this season. The last time the two teams met, during the first weekend of the spring season, it was an intense match-up and the sequel was more of the same. However, after some aggressive play from both squads, the Dartmouth squad emerged victorious by a whopping 50 points. Army's forwards controlled play in the first minutes of game, but soon the DWRC adjusted and began committing more forwards to contact.
