‘Live @ the Bema' concert draws crowds in its first year

James Peng / The Dartmouth Staff On Sunday, Programming Board and the student-run FM station 99 Rock co-sponsored the "Live @ the Bema" concert, concluding Fieldstock weekend with an afternoon of performances by New York musician Brent Knight, local bands All About Gladys and the Chris Kleeman Band and the student band TOAST.

Stephen Schwartz, the composer and lyricist of "Wicked," Taye Diggs, an actor in the Broadway musical "Rent," and Casey Nicholaw, a Broadway director and the choreographer of "The Book of Mormon," all have a unique experience in common an internship at the New London Barn Playhouse.

Professors, alumni stage Shakespeare in Bosnia-Herzegovina

When Aidan Nelson '12 first informed friends of his post-graduation plans to head to Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, to help direct a performance of Shakespeare's "As You Like It," many were confused about where exactly he would be going. "Every time I mentioned I was going to Bosnia for the summer people would be like, Oh you're going to Boston,'" Nelson said.

New York Theatre Workshop debuts six original plays

In addition to the numerous sports camps that Dartmouth hosts over the summer, the New York Theatre Workshop's summer residency from July 29 to August 18 is a unique retreat for professional artists to create new works in Hanover, far from the city and pressure of critics. The New York Theatre Workshop returns this summer for its 21st summer-in-residence at the College.

Students attend Edinburgh International Film Festival on new FSP

Gavin Huang / The Dartmouth Staff Dartmouth students studying abroad at the Screen Academy Scotland at Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland had a welcome surprise in June when the Olympic torch passed right outside their school, prompting loud excitement and a quick dash out of the classroom to join the "cheering crowds," according to film professor Jeffrey Ruoff.

Hop previews acts and artists for upcoming Year of the Arts

From political sketch comedy to classical baroque chamber music, the upcoming 2012-2013 season at the Hopkins Center will host an impressive collection of musical acts, theater groups and performance artists, with the intention of making the Hop's 50th anniversary an unforgettable year-long celebration as part of the Year of the Arts initiative announced in June. At Wednesday's visiting artist season preview, Hop programming director Margaret Lawrence presented next year's featured acts to a packed audience of students and community members in Moore Theater. "This summer already has been a sign of great things to come," Lawrence said.

Vox Theater hopes to connect alumni and inspire students

People generally associate Dartmouth's strong alumni network with finance, but the recent formation of the Vox Theater Group is challenging this stereotype. Thom Pasculli '05, Kate Mulley '05 and Matthew Cohn '08 established Vox Theater, an alumni theater troupe, in February 2012.
