I've been praised and criticized for my last column that listed a few faults of vegetarianism and praised those who ate meat, not just vegetables. Strangely, mostly girls have blitzed to criticize me, while most guys praised my taste in meat. I was even invited to the College radio station to do a commentary. But I think the worst attack on my column was by Elinor Actipis '98 ["Animals Have Feelings Too," The Dartmouth, March 4]. I don't mean to start some kind of war, but I wish to respond and to expound on the topic.

I don't understand vegetarians and rarely venture forth into Home Plate where they serve "healthy" food. And the thought of meals without beef, mutton, chicken or pork makes me cringe. There is nothing like the feeling of sinking my teeth into a juicy steak dripping with sauce or savoring a piece of pork chop that my friend used to make as it would melt in my mouth. Almost ethereal. I staunchly believe that God is a meat-eater.

A long time ago, I made a promise to myself that I would do a few things before I die. I made list of things -- some trivial, some stupid and many dangerous. I won't discuss all of my future plans, because some people may not be exactly pleased with my intentions.

Ah, Winter Carnival, another glorious excuse to party. As if we need an excuse to party. I am reminded at this moment of something my friend back home used to say whenever we ignored our school work and went partying. She said, "You can always make up tests and papers, but you can never make up a party!" Now that should be our college motto. While other Ivies may beat us in academia, I'd like to see them throw tons of parties and consume the countless kegs of beer that we go through in one weekend. And have the College sanction it.

I am now 20 years old, and it scares the crap out of me. I've been kind of dreading this moment for awhile.

I come from an interesting religious background. My mother is a "non-practicing" Protestant. My grandmother is a die-hard Catholic. My grandfather was a Buddhist, and my father is an avowed atheist. I come from a very tolerant background when it comes to religion. I made friends with Catholics, Jews and Muslims, seeing no distinction at all.

Let's look at some facts about President Clinton while he has held public office. Most people will remember Gennifer Flowers from Clinton's '92 campaign and her allegations of sexual misbehavior and conduct. Then there is Paula Jones who alleges that Clinton dropped his pants and asked her to perform a certain sexual act.

I woke up with a feeling of trepidation and dread. Slowly, I turned to look at my alarm clock. It read 10:30 a.m. I cursed out loud using every profanity that is in my vocabulary. I had missed my class. Trying to shrug off my drowsiness, I stood up, only to lose my balance and crash to the bed. I vaguely remember turning off the alarm clock and promising myself only five more minutes of sleep. Oh well, I thought. I had one more hour before I had to go to my next class. I turned in and woke up at 1 p.m. I had missed my next class.

Twas a quiet night, about a few weeks into the first term. As I walked to the bathroom to brush my teeth and turn in for the night, I heard retching noises and smelled an odor that usually belongs in frat houses. I saw a few freshmen puking their dinners out in the hallway and heard moans coming from a room down the hall. Then I realized, maybe for the first time, that I was the Undergraduate Advisor and had to do something. As I tried to remember what the heck I was supposed to do, I began to wonder what I had done by signing up to be an Undergraduate Advisor.

I am a guy cheerleader. For reasons unknown to me, I still cannot say those words without smirking or suppressing a chuckle. Please don't get me wrong, I am not ashamed. People often ask me what motivated me to become involved with such an activity that is primarily reserved for the opposite sex. I reply, "Why not?"

Although Dartmouth may not top U.S. News and World Report's ranking of the nation's best colleges, it beats out all the other Ivies in intangible categories like "Quality of Life," "Food Quality" and "Dorm Size" in the 1998 edition of The Princeton Review's "The Best 311 Colleges."

The recent surge in crime at the University of Pennsylvania has focused national attention on the issue of security at college campuses -- and has served as a marked contrast to the relative safety of the College and the surrounding Hanover area.
