After nearly two weeks off from game play, Dartmouth's field hockey team came into this past weekend aching for a challenge. The previously undefeated Big Green got that and more from Saturday's opponent, the Princeton Tigers.

After two early season victories, Dartmouth's men's soccer team was looking toward this past Saturday's Ivy League opener against Princeton chomping at the bit. Despite this hunger for victory, the Big Green could not solve the riddle that was keeper Jason White, and Dartmouth lost, 3-0.

This sucks. No doubts about it, no questions asked, this plain, old sucks. The Boston Red Sox, who have led the AL East for six weeks and have been one of the five best teams in the American League the entire season, will have only one, count 'em one, representative at the 2001 All-Star Game in Seattle.

The members of Thayer Engineering School at Dartmouth have made a strong stand in competition against larger engineering schools. The Big Green finished 7th in the Formula SAE racing event and competition this past week against 124 other schools from around the globe.

It's time for the sea of red, the sliding, the dirt and the slow-ass moonballers. Once again it is time for the French Open in tennis. This annual tournament of who can last longer running down balls on a surface that should have long ago been abolished, at least from an American's point of view, will once again showcase European excellence and American ineptitude on the greatest equalizer in tennis, clay courts.

Tom McArdle '03 has qualified for the NCAA outdoor track and field championship to be held at the University of Oregon tomorrow. McArdle and coach Barry Harwick headed out to the West Coast yesterday to prepare for McArdle's running of the 10,000 meters.

Once again, the players of Dartmouth's softball team have been rewarded as individuals for the accomplishments that led to Dartmouth's second straight 20-win season and a school record for Ivy League victories. This time, the Ivy League named five Big Green players to the 2001 All-Ivy team.

With the women's lacrosse season over and Maryland once again crowned champion, many individuals got their well deserved recognition this week. Three Dartmouth players received nomination to the Brine/IWLCA All-American team.

Dartmouth's athletic department received a new member yesterday when Ryan Snider was named assistant director of athletics for marketing and promotions. Snider will take over his new duties on June 4.

With the year drawing near its close, Dartmouth presented its major athletic awards Monday. Taking home the Kenneth Archibald Prize, which is given to the senior who has been "the best all-around athlete with regard to moral worth and high standing in scholarship," was Brian Nickerson '00 the Big Green baseball co-captain.

With Dartmouth sitting at home in Hanover, the women's lacrosse final four was raging this past weekend at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Once againt the Maryland Terrapins walked away with the title, their eighth in a row, by virtue of a 14-13 double overtime nailbiter against the Georgetown Hoyas.

With two-time captain Caleb Moore '01 graduating and heading towards the NFL's Tennessee Titans, the Dartmouth football team needed to choose its next captain in the hopes that he might lead the Big Green to their first winning season since 1997. The choice was made yesterday by Coach John Lyons: Matt Mercer '02 will be Dartmouth's new captain.

"What the world needs is an enema but there are too many assholes in the world to choose from to know where to put the hose, so a hero would be my second choice" says the Megadeth founder Dave Mustaine. To the casual reader, this might seem like utter b.s., just another no talent guy trying to lead a crusade and not really qualified to be writing a major music album. To those same people, that statement about the founder's new album title would cause a scowl at the least and perhaps a gesture of more profound disgust. But to those of us initiated into the heavy metal fraternity who are somewhat familiar with the founder, this just made us kick back and grin our best 100-megawatt smile.

In continuing with the string of postseason awards won by Dartmouth athletes, the baseball team received their well deserved recognition this weekend. Seven Big Green ball players were named to the All-Ivy team, three on the first team, one on the second and three receiving honorable mention.

Carrie Hoverman '01 has had quite a week. After being named to the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association All-Star Team and the Verizon Academic All-District I Women's Softball Team, the Big Green first baseman was named to the 2001 Northeast All-Region Team.

A few days after receiving word that she had been named to the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association All-Star Team, Dartmouth's Carrie Hoverman '01 received further good news. Yesterday, the Big Green first baseman was selected as a member of the Verizon Academic All-District I Women's Softball Team.
