Remember the end of "Ferris Buehler's Day Off" when Ferris runs into Mr. Rooney right outside the Buehler's back door? Ferris had just had the best day of his life and had miraculously beaten both his parents home. All he had to do was sneak up into bed and he was home free, he could declare victory. Then wham! He sees Mr. Rooney. He knew he was screwed, we knew he was screwed and had it not been for the heroics of his sister, he'd be on the five-year plan for high school.

This week, I'm back to interviews. I decided to sit down with track star Muhammed Abdul-Shakoor '10 and find out why anyone would want to continually punish himself with brutal running workouts every day. With flowing dreadlocks and a chiseled body, Shakoor is the definition of speed. If you take one glance at the man, you automatically assume he's faster than you. During the conversation, I secretly hoped that some of his speed would rub off on me and that I'd soon be able to run the 100-meter dash in under 10 seconds. It turns out that speed is nontransferable, however, and I would have to settle for a good conversation instead.

The No. 7 Cornell University men's lacrosse team defeated Loyola University, 11-10, in the third overtime period on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament, IvyLeagueSports.com reported. The battle between the Big Red and the Greyhounds was the longest game either school has played in the NCAA tournament and the longest game ever recorded in Loyola men's lacrosse history. On the women's side, the University of Pennsylvania survived past the first round of the NCAA tournament, beating Boston University, 14-9, on Saturday, DailyPennsylvanian.com reported. This is the third time in the past four years that the Quakers have advanced to the second round after beating the Terriers. The Penn women will now confront the No. 1 University of Maryland squad in the quarterfinals next weekend.

The Big Green football team joined up with DKMS Americas the largest bone marrow donor center in the world with over two million registered donors in hosting a bone marrow drive on Friday afternoon at Memorial Field. Although the national average for bone marrow drives is 20, there were 117 people who registered during this event, according to former Big Green receiver and field cordinator of the drive Kyle Battle '11. Tables were set up for the 15-minute cheek swab testing procedure while the football squad engaged in its last Spring scrimmage. By helping to set up the drive, Dartmouth joined the DKMS Americas' mission to save the life of Jackson Liff, a one-year old boy suffering from the potentially fatal immunodeficiency disorder, chronic granulomatous.

Usually, this column is used to interview some of Dartmouth's most interesting athletes, but, after nearly instigating a Dartmouth baseball civil war between the pitchers and fielders, I figured I should change things up a bitthis week. Besides, nearly every Spring sport is done for the season and, like the great Allen Iverson, no one wants to talk about practice. My editors told me I would sound too cocky if I interviewed myself, since I'm on the football team, so I decided to make a playlist for my Spring athletic experience. Each song reflects a different moment of this increasingly interesting term.

So I thought I had a pretty good idea for this column. It seems like every other night, I'm crushed by many of my friends who say they can't go out because they "have lift the next morning." I usually respond by making a raised-eyebrow face, which pretty clearly suggests, "Fine, but for the record, I think you're being a wussy." (Except usually that last word begins with a p, not a w.)

Last week, I chatted with a couple of Dartmouth baseball pitchers who made the bold claim that the members of the pitching squad are the best athletes on the field. Apparently, every single positional player on the team disagreed. So this week, I decided to sit down with outfielder Sam Bean '11 and first baseman Jason Brooks '11 to hear their side of the argument.

Columbia University hired former St. Mary's of California assistant coach Kyle Smith as its men's basketball head coach, the Associated Press reported. He replaces Joe Jones, who left to become an assistant coach at Boston College. Jones will be working under former Cornell coach Steve Donahue. In his seven years at Columbia, Jones posted an 86-108 record. Last season, the Lions went 11-17 in regular-season play and 5-9 in the Ivy League. Columbia won its only Ivy League title 42 years ago in the 1967-68 season. Last March, Smith helped to lead St. Mary's to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. The 10th-seeded Gaels posted wins over the University of Richmond and Villanova University before falling to Baylor University on the second weekend.

If the Big Green (5-8, 2-4 Ivy) had won the game it would have made the Ivy League tournament as Harvard University lost to Yale University earlier in the day, giving Dartmouth a chance at a playoff berth.

The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team traveled to the University of Pennsylvania this weekend to finish its regular season and came away with second place in the Ivy League Tournament after falling 9-8 to the Quakers in the championship game. The Dartmouth women's post-season tournaments hopes are not dashed, however, as they still have a chance at securing an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
