Former Big Green football captain and baseball star Scott Creelman '64 died on Wednesday after a five-year struggle with cancer, according to Masslive.com. He led the 1963 football squad to a tie with Princeton University for the Ivy League Championship title. On the pitching mound, Creelman threw 89 strikeouts in the 1963 season, setting what was a single-season record at the time. A few years ago, before I joined the hordes of afternoon treadmill warriors, I was a real athlete on real teams. I never entertained illusions about playing a sport in college, but memories of the glory days still linger team bus rides, the thundering of spikes on the banked track for state meets in Boston and a few broken fingers sustained as a soccer goalie. No number of hours on the elliptical compares to actually playing a sport, and even running outside just makes me nostalgic for gossip-filled road runs.

Balancing school work and the practice-and-play schedule of Division I athletics seems challenging enough, so I'm always in awe of double-varsity athletes. Though few and far between, there are some brave and talented students who choose to wear two jerseys in addition to maintaining an academic agenda. This weekend I sat down with alpine skier and men's lacrosse player Gunnar Shaw '14 to discuss his recent ACL surgery, being a two-sport athlete and competing so close to home.

Eight proved to be the lucky number for the men's lightweight and women's crew teams' first varsity boats, whose octets took second and third, respectively, in the Grand Finals at the Eastern Sprints this past weekend. The men's heavyweight crew team failed to send its first varsity boat to the Grand Finals, but it qualified for the IRA National Championships and placed several boats in the top 10 of their respective divisions.

Last Friday, I saw a group of students whacking around a tennis ball on the golf course in their version of "campus golf." Inspired, I sat down with golfer Julie Campbell '13 to find out more about the women's golf team. Because the golf season ended last month, we strayed from the usual in-season questions and talked about tees, cat markers and female golfers.

"You know it's tough the morale of the team was broken," team captain Jeff Onstott '11 said. "This is what we worked for all year, to get to this point, and we just couldn't pull it off. I feel like we had another very strong team this year but baseball is a funny game."

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Yale University fullback Shane Bannon in the seventh round of the NFL Draft on Saturday, the New Haven Register reported. Bannon, who worked out with the Chiefs in April, was the 223rd overall selection of the 254 players that were drafted and was the Chief's ninth pick. He is the first Yale football player to be drafted since 2004. Last season, Bannon posted a career-best 13 catches for the Bulldogs. Two of Bannon's former teammates, Chris Blohm and Tom McCarthy, did not get drafted but hope to be signed as free agents if the NFL lockout is resolved. Dartmouth longsnapper Shane Peterlin '11 and defensive end Charles Bay '11 were not drafted and must also wait for the end of the labor dispute before signing with a team.

The sun was shining on Dartmouth baseball this weekend. After a cold start to the morning on Saturday at the annual Green and White football scrimmage, the day turned around by afternoon and a crowd gathered at Red Rolfe Field. Spirits ran high for the fans of the home team, a lively mix of student hecklers and devoted parents, including a couple who flew out to support the Big Green on Senior Day even though their son had graduated in 2009.

This week I decided to throw a little spin on the traditional one-on-one formula. Dartmouth always brags about the strength of its community, so I wanted to portray some of the school's legendary camaraderie. Instead of interviewing only one of the Big Green's many talented athletes, I found a group of gifted individuals in a group study room in Woodward Hall.
