With 4:25 remaining in the first half and the Big Green down 35-22, Brandon Mitchell-Day ’26 caught a pass at the top of the key and knew he needed to make a play. He had just set a pin-down off-ball screen for Dusan Neskovic ’24 and now eyed up the defense of Ivy League’s cream of the crop, the Princeton Tigers.
In June 2021, the NCAA announced that student athletes across all three NCAA divisions would be allowed to profit off of their name, image and likeness. Per the Division II Presidents Council chair Sandra Jordan, “the new policy preserves the fact college sports are not pay-for-play.” The NCAA takes a strong stance against the pay-for-play concept — that recruited students are compensated in exchange for their commitment to play for a school — in order to maintain a level playing field for schools recruiting student athletes. NIL, however, has opened up a new opportunity for student athletes to receive external compensation, threatening the integrity of the NCAA’s stance against pay-for-play. And with it, uncertainty for the Ivy League’s ability to stay competitive in the NCAA.
Despite a tie and a loss this weekend, women’s hockey displayed improvement and determination in their home matchups against No. 11 Princeton University and No. 6 Quinnipiac University. The games were the first two of an 11-game stretch against ECAC opponents that will wrap up the Big Green’s season.
On Saturday night, Dartmouth men’s ice hockey hosted the University of Vermont at Thompson Arena to conclude their non-conference match-ups for the 2023-2024 season. In front of a sold-out crowd, the Big Green pulled through to deliver a 4-3 win over the Catamounts, increasing their record to 4-4-6.

This November, Caitlin Kowalski GR’20 won a $60,000 award from the 2023 L’Oréal USA Women in Science program for her research studying how fungi can impact our health. The program, which has provided more than $5 million dollars in grants since its inception 20 years ago, grants awards annually to five female postdoctoral researchers. In her work, Kowalski specifically aims to understand how fungi that live on human skin protect against pathogens and skin infections. The Dartmouth spoke with Kowalski to discuss her research interests, reflections on the award and goals for the future.

Friday, Nov. 10
On Nov. 5, the Dartmouth Student Government Senate met for its eighth weekly meeting of the fall term. Led by student body president Jessica Chiriboga ’24, the Senate discussed initiatives from its Mental Health Committee regarding student wellness and meetings previously held with campus executives.
Dartmouth’s grading system can differ depending on the department. The government department expects their professors — at least in non-seminar classes and classes with over ten students — to uphold a B+ median. Similarly, the economics department offers professors a suggested B+ median according to economics professor Elizabeth Curtis. In order to accomplish this, professors must grade on a curve, comparing students to others in the class to achieve the desired overall median. This practice has sparked countless debates regarding the validity of distributive grading and the value of achieving a top GPA.

On Friday, Nov. 3, Dartmouth men’s hockey hosted nationally ranked No. 8 Quinnipiac University at Thompson Arena, tying 2-2 and then winning 1-0 in a shootout. The following day, the Big Green defeated the Tigers of Princeton University 5-4, with CJ Foley ’27 scoring the game-winning goal with less than a minute remaining.

It’s that time of year again. From slams to buckets to the “nothing but nylons,” college basketball will return in one week. The Dartmouth Big Green’s first contest will take place on Nov. 6 after a 10-18 overall, 6-8 conference campaign last year. They will open the season with a marquee matchup, visiting the No. 2 Duke University Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.

Despite this being her first race since last year’s Ivy League Heptagonal Championship, HEPS, cross country runner Ellie Tymorek ’25 placed first in the Women’s Championship 5k Individual race at the New England Championship, held at Franklin Park in Boston on Saturday, Oct. 7.

This past weekend, men’s tennis traveled to New Haven to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals at Yale University. The Big Green faced off against 13 other collegiate teams.

On Thursday, Oct. 5th, the College’s lawyers responded to the men’s basketball team’s filing to unionize on Sept. 10, arguing that student athletes cannot be considered employees because their scholarship role does not depend on participation while the college loses money from Dartmouth’s basketball program. Joe McConnell, who represented Dartmouth in a National Labor Relations Board hearing, suggests that the term “student athletes” and the way it is used at national powerhouse athletic programs, such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Kansas, is also applicable at Dartmouth.
