Students have elected Cait McGovern ’21 and Jonathan Briffault ’21 as their Student Assembly president and vice president, respectively. The McGovern-Briffault ticket ran a campaign focused on student wellness, administrative transparency and student engagement.

College admits 8.8 percent of applicants to Class of 2024

Dartmouth admitted 1,881 students to the Class of 2024 on Thursday with an 8.8 percent acceptance rate — the third-lowest in the College’s history. International students comprise a  record-high 14 percent of the accepted cohort, up from 12 percent for the Class of 2023.

A Dartmouth undergraduate student has tested presumptive positive for COVID-19, College spokesperson Diana Lawrence confirmed to The Dartmouth on Wednesday night. This marks the first case in Dartmouth’s undergraduate community, after a graduate student tested presumptive positive on Monday.

Dartmouth to hold online classes for all of spring term

Students will not return to campus in May, provost Joseph Helble announced to the Dartmouth community in an email Tuesday afternoon. Both graduate and undergraduate classes will be conducted online for the entirety of spring term.

Susan Rice talks new memoir, experience in national security

Former U.S. national security advisor and ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice spoke in Spaulding Auditorium on Thursday afternoon. In a discussion with Dickey Center director Daniel Benjamin, who served with Rice during the Clinton and Obama administrations, Rice discussed her years in public service, family background, the 2020 Democratic primary, the government’s handling of novel coronavirus and the motivation behind her new memoir, “Tough Love.”

Spread of coronavirus in Italy cuts short study abroad program

The College is ending a language study program in Italy early due to concerns about the spread of novel coronavirus. While two other Dartmouth programs in France are continuing as planned, a group of students who traveled to northern Italy are both not going to class and self-monitoring for the virus over the next 14 days, according to College spokesperson Diana Lawrence.

Newly renovated building honors anonymous donors to Dartmouth

Funded primarily by the College’s ongoing “The Call to Lead” capital campaign, the newly renovated Anonymous Hall’s construction prioritizes sustainability and alumni recognition. The name of the building — originally Dana Biomedical Library — is intended to acknowledge the contributions of Dartmouth alumni and comes at the request of the anonymous lead donor for the project, who declined publicity.

Dartmouth ranks 55th in study of generosity in college financial aid

Dartmouth ranked low among peer institutions in a Chronicle of Higher Education study of colleges that are most “generous” to its financially neediest students. The rankings, which were released on Jan. 26 using United States Department of Education data from 2017 to 2018, placed Dartmouth at 55 on the list, making it the only Ivy League school not included in the top 50.

Sanders wins New Hampshire primary

After months of town halls, rallies and stump speeches, the 2020 New Hampshire Democratic presidential primary ended with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) claiming the top spot with 25.7 percent of the votes, the Associated Press projects as of press time. South Bend, IN mayor Pete Buttegieg narrowly followed with 24.4 percent of the vote, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) garnered 19.7 percent of the vote to make a comeback third-place win.

'It felt very much like a punishment': Medical leave at Dartmouth

In spring 2018, a student visited her friend Jeremy Hadfield ’21’s room after not hearing from him for several days and found a carefully-crafted suicide note on his desk. After panicking over what she thought meant the loss of her friend’s life, Hadfield entered the room. With much encouragement, Hadfield decided to seek help at Dick’s House, And after meeting with a counselor the next day, Hadfield agreed to the terms of voluntary medical withdrawal.

Busy flu season leads to heavier traffic at College infirmary

Flu season has arrived in Hanover, and Dick’s House has seen heavier traffic in recent weeks — making it difficult for students to secure primary care appointments or a bed in the College’s infirmary.
