On March 16, Annabelle Zhang ’27 and Vihan Jayawardhane ’27 will assume the roles of editor-in-chief and publisher to head the paper’s 183rd directorate. They will replace outgoing Editor-in-Chief Charlotte Hampton ’26 and Publisher Quentin Proud ’26, respectively.

Zhang is a geography and government modified with philosophy and economics double major from Millburn, N.J. She began writing for The Dartmouth in her freshman fall and served as an associate news managing editor during her freshman spring and associate executive editor during her sophomore fall. Most recently, she was news managing editor for two terms during her sophomore winter and junior fall.

Jayawardhane is an economics and government double major from Wilton, Conn. He joined The Dartmouth during his freshman fall as an analyst for the business strategy team before taking over as business strategy co-director in his junior year alongside Ipek Kendircioglu ’26.

Zhang says she hopes to continue supporting investigative journalism and will work on “building relationships” with the College and Upper Valley community.

“We occupy a super unique niche as a student-run newspaper in the Upper Valley, and I think that our geographic location and organizational structure should drive the ethos of this institution,” Zhang said. “As our staff continues to grow, it’s been increasingly important for me to build not only a collective of writers, but also a group of people who are building relationships with each other and can think of The Dartmouth as a community.”

On the business side, Jayawardhane said his main goals are to invest in talent, increase available capital and build community within the business and strategy team.

“I want to equip members of the organization on business and editorial with the critical thinking and creative skills that they need and that are broadly applicable to their personal and professional experience,” Jayawardhane said.

As publisher, Jayawardhane also hopes to continue the expansion of multimedia production of the 182nd directorate.

“I think it’s really vital to what we do in a changing media landscape,” Jayawardhane said.

For both Zhang and Jayawardhane, success in their roles is defined by supporting The Dartmouth staff. Zhang said she hopes to help reporters “pursue stories that they’re passionate about with tangible impacts on the communities around us.”
