Graduate student dies in Vermont car accident

Correction appended

First-year physics graduate student Mikhail Lomakin died in Hartford, Vt., early Saturday morning, according to a campus-wide email from Interim College President Carol Folt and Dean of Graduate Studies Jon Kull '88. The 24-year-old was found at the scene of a car accident on I-91 southbound at mile marker 73 in Hartford, according to News10 ABC.

Police were called to the scene at 2:24 a.m. on Oct. 6 after drivers saw a man lying in the right lane of travel. Two motorists saw Lomakin, who police referred to as a pedestrian, in the road but were unable to avoid hitting him, according to the Associated Press. The weather at the time was rainy and foggy.

Lomakin's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington, Vt., for an autopsy, News10 ABC reported.

Police are asking anyone who saw Lomakin on Oct. 5 or 6 and any motorists who saw a pedestrian on the roadway or noticed anything suspicious on I-91 early Saturday to call Vermont State Police in Royalton at 802-234-9933.

Folt and Kull offered their condolences to Lomakin's friends and family and urged community members who wish to speak to a counselor to call Safety and Security.
