Jimmy Carter's Draft Politics

To the Editor:

Columnist Michael Kreicher '08 is right (The Dartmouth, "A Draft? No Chance," November 19).

No one needs to worry about a draft. It won't happen.

One correction: The draft did indeed end in 1973, however, that was three years before Jimmy Carter was elected president.

So, he didn't end the draft; to the contrary, he reinstated draft registration in 1980, the year after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan.
