Drop the Losing Team

To the Editor:

Perhaps the real mistake in the attempt to eliminate swimming was that the College picked the wrong sport.

Football has become non-competitive. Given current undergraduate male headcounts and the emphasis on student body diversity (especially foreign students), it seems unlikely there will ever be a return to the days of yore. While I personally feel the College should be expanding the undergraduate enrollment, I know the lack of dorm building post-coeducation and the Dartmouth plan leaves us well behind the curve for any such expansion. Dropping football would provide funds for other sports (including swimming) and allow us to continue to build a reputation in sports like hockey and soccer -- sports that require fewer athletes to be successful and may be better supported by current admissions policies.
