Levtov wins outstanding junior award

Amarna President Anat Levtov '98 received the Ranny B. Cardozo '78 Award as "the outstanding member of the junior class" at a ceremony in Blunt Alumni Center at the end of Spring term.

Following recommendations from classmates, a committee of seniors selected Levtov for the award based on her participation in many facets of campus life.

Along with her involvement in Amarna undergraduate society, Levtov has been an undergraduate advisor, will be an area coordinator next year, tutors international students, was a driving force behind the renewal of the education department, is a voice for sexual abuse victims on campus and is active in the department of Middle Eastern languages and literatures.

Dean of the Class of 1998 Lisa Thum said Levtov "exemplifies in full measure the energy, sensitivity and commitment to campus activities" for which the Ranny B. Cardozo award stands.

The award was established by the parents and classmates of Cardozo, who died in October 1976, to be awarded to the student who "most exemplifies his academic enthusiasm, genuine concern for fellow classmates and energetic participation in campus and community activities," Thum said.

Until she arrived at the ceremony, Levtov was not aware she would receive an award.

She said she thought she was going to Blunt to meet with senior members of Amarna and discuss their final bequests meeting.

Thum read part of a letter from Deborah Carbonaro '97 recommending Levtov for the award. Carbonaro said Levtov is the "issues woman" at Amarna and is "passionate about everything -- campus issues and most of all, people."

Levtov's name will be added to a plaque in Dean of the College Lee Pelton's office.

Thum gave Levtov a letter from Pelton, an embossed tray and two mint julep cups.

About 20 of Levtov's friends attended the ceremony in Blunt.
