Assembly to suggest COS appointees

The Student Assembly passed a resolution last night to nominate up to 12 students for consideration by Dean of the College Lee Pelton in the selection of members of the Committee on Standards.

The COS resolution does not give the Assembly the power to appoint students to the committee, which hears and adjudicates cases of students accused of violating the College's rules. Pelton appoints some of the students to the board. Three students and three alternates are chosen by election.

Student Assembly Vice President Chris Swift '98 sponsored the resolution, which was drafted to remedy a lack of direct student involvement in the nomination process.

Pelton currently makes his nominations from "who he knows and who asks him," Swift said. The resolution will allow the Assembly to give him ideas, which he may then use or ignore, Swift said.

Swift said College Judicial Officer Marcia Kelly is in favor of the proposal and has indicated that Pelton supports it. He said this measure will help assure that students serve on the COS for all four terms.

The Assembly also discussed the possibility of Dartmouth Dining Services' implementing a mandatory $850 Declining Balance Account beginning this summer. They plan to continue the discussion next week and consider possible reactions, including a boycott of dining services.
