Schutt '96 arrested for burglary in dormitory

Hanover Police arrested Jacqueline Schutt '96 on Monday and charged her with burglary, a felony which could carry a sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a $4,000 fine.

Schutt allegedly broke into a room in the Andres residence hall early in the morning on April 21 and stole more than $500 worth of clothing, according to a Hanover Police Department press release.

In addition to the theft, Schutt allegedly "spread cigarette ashes and hard liquor around the interior of the room prior to leaving," according to the release.

Detective R. Graham Baynes said the incident is "still under investigation and more arrests are a possibility."

"It appears to be related to a personality conflict between Ms. Schutt and the victim," Baynes said.

Although the break-in occurred on April 21, the victim did not file a complaint until April 29.

"The victim had suspicions about Ms. Schutt and tried to resolve the issue on a personal level between the two," Baynes said.

After eight days, Baynes said, the victim decided "that couldn't be done and she asked for our assistance, and we initiated the investigation."

The investigation led to her arrest. Schutt will be arraigned on June 12 in the Hanover District Court.

Baynes said the police have not recovered the garments taken from the victim's closet, and he doubts that will be possible.
