Pelton appoints new budget director

Richard Heck will replace Matthew McManness as executive officer in the Dean of the College's office in mid-August.

Heck has worked as the director of the budget at Colgate University for the past 16 years.

As executive officer, Heck will oversee "budget and financial matters that pertain specifically to the Dean of the College's office,"Assistant Dean of the College Janet Terp said.

These areas include residential life, student life and athletics, Terp said. Heck will work closely with the budget directors of these areas as well as with individual offices such as the Women's Resource Center and the International Office, according to Terp.

At Colgate, Heck oversaw budgeting for the areas of student services, athletic programs, auxiliary programs and other areas, Terp said.

"He has quite a bit of experience in business and financial affairs," she said.

Heck said at Colgate he was involved primarily in central planning and he is excited to begin work at Dartmouth where he believes his job will be "a little more varied" and include more direct involvement with student programs.

Having worked with several members of the Dartmouth community at Colgate, including Dean of the College Lee Pelton, Heck said it will be nice to know some people at Dartmouth before his arrival.

"It seems that the people I know at Dartmouth ... all seem to be striving for excellence," Heck said. "It is an exciting opportunity."

McManness announced his resignation in February and left the College this month to become the vice president for business affairs at the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, Md.
