The Winter Carnival Dining Guide: where to eat in and around Hanover

Although many freshmen may not realize it, Hanover offers more dining options than Full Fare or Home Plate. While family and friends are in town for the Carnival, students should take the opportunity to con them into buying them dinner at one of the various restaurants in the area.

Panda House

The Panda House is another Chinese Restaurant offering a wide selection of Chinese cuisine in a fine setting. Dinners range from $5 to $10. It is at 3 Lebanon St. Hanover (643-1290).

Subway

For people accustomed to the quick pace of urban life may like to try Hanover's specimen of the fast food restaurant, Subway. Customers, often College and Hanover High School students, watch the employees construct their submarine sandwiches. Six-inch sandwiches cost between $3 and $4 and foot-long subs are from $4 to $5. On special now are the six-inch cold cut combo for $1.49 and the six-inch meatball sub for $1.69. It is at 11 Lebanon St. (643-0360).

C & A's Pizza

Those seeking a pizza joint should turn to C & A's Pizza to try their pies as well as their pastas, spaghetti, subs and beer. Prices range from $5 to $10. It is at 17 Lebanon, Hanover (643-2966).

Cafe Buon Gustaio

Cafe Buon Gustaio offers north Italian cuisine in an intimate, candlelit setting. Flowers and decorations make the dining room and bar very comfortable places to enjoy their pastas and other dishes. Prices range from $8 to $20. Open for dinner only, Buon Gustaio suggests making reservations. It is at 72 S. Main, Hanover (643-5711).

The Dirt Cowboy Cafe

The Dirt Cowboy Cafe is the local coffee house. Often the site of poetry readings and always a place to relax, the cafe serves all manner of coffees for $1 to $3. The cafe also bakes its own pastries. It is at 9 S. Main, Hanover (643-1323).

Everything But Anchovies

Everything But Anchovies is another pizza hangout for students and locals. Besides pizzas ranging from $5 to $50, EBAs also prepares all types of food, including sandwiches, salads, buffalo wings, and ice cream. It is at 5 Allen, Hanover (643-6135).

5 Olde Nugget Alley

Another eatery with a shining name, 5 Olde Nugget Alley, offers a large variety of cuisine, especially American and Mexican. Local residents and students often fill its basement bar and dining room, which features several decorative antiques. Prices are around $10 or less. (643-5081)

Foodee's

Foodee's specializes in gourmet pizzas and international pastas. Families, students, and residents often show up to partake of the pizza that won the Best Pizza in New England Contest in 1990, held by WBZ radio in Boston. Prices range from $5 to $15. It is at 45 Lyme Road, Hanover (643-8852).

Good Fortune

Good Fortune is a Chinese restaurant serving students and area residents. Lunches cost $5 and up while dinners prices start at $7. It is at 45 Hanover St., Lebanon (448-3888).

The Daniel Webster Room

The Daniel Webster Room at the Hanover Inn on the Dartmouth Green offers fine continental American dining in elegant surroundings. The American Automotive Association rated it Hanover's only four diamond restaurant. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner five days a week and for Sunday brunch. Lunches average at $8 and dinners cost approximately $19. Each Friday afternoon, The Daniel Webster Room offers a popular buffet for $8. Dinner attracts more people from the surrounding area. Reservations are encouraged for dinner, the Friday buffet and Sunday brunch. Dartmouth undergraduates may use their student identification cards for payment. (643-4300)

The Ivy Grill

Also within the Hanover Inn, the Ivy Grill, serves more contemporary meals than the Daniel Webster Room. Aimed at a younger crowd, the Grill offers more pasta and vegetarian items for lunch and dinner seven days a week. With lunches around $8 and dinners from $10 to $15, the Grill also accepts Dartmouth student identifications as payment. (643-1410)

Jesse's

Jesse's Steaks, Seafood & Tavern specializes in what its name implies. Jesse's offers dinners of steaks, seafood, and drinks to its clientele of mainly travelers and Hospital personnel. Dinner usually costs between $15 and $16 and reservations are recommended. It is on Route 120 in Hanover (643-4111).

Jewel of India

Jewel Of India enables customers to sample North Indian cuisine. Many professors and hospital staff eat lunch and dinner here. Prices range from $7 to $18. Although in a casual setting, reservations are necessary. It is at 27 Lebanon, Hanover (643-2217).

Lou's Restaurant

With an informal setting, Lou's Restaurant prepares American dishes such as hamburgers and pasta. Students, professors and local families frequent here to enjoy Lou's breakfasts, lunches, dinners and popular desserts. Also, Lou's has its own bakery. Prices range from $4 to $8. It is at 30 S. Main, Hanover (643-3321).

Lui Lui

Lui Lui is a casual Italian pizzeria. Students and families show up to enjoy Lui Lui's array of pastas and pizzas. Lunches run from $4 to $5, dinners are $7 to $8 and pizzas are $6 to $12. Reservations are necessary only for parties larger than ten. It is at Powerhouse Mall in West Lebanon (298-7070).

Molly's Balloon

Although formerly known as a Mexican restaurant, Molly's Balloon changed to include more various items in its menu. Serving pasta, soup, salad, stir fry and other meals beside the Mexican dishes, Molly's Balloon sees itself as similar to T.G.I.Fridays. Smoking is not allowed at all here. All sorts of people, from students to senior citizens, frequent the establishment. It is at 43 S. Main, Hanover (643-2570).

Mrs. Ou's

Mrs. Ou's serves fine Cantonese cuisine. Very popular with faculty and students, Mrs. Ou's employs several chefs from Fu's in New York City. The menu has several items unique to the area that, according to the management, has attracted individuals such as Michael J. Fox. Lunches range from $5 to $7 and dinners are $6 to $13. It is at 44 S. Main, Hanover (643-8866).

Murphy's Tavern

Murphy's Tavern is a steak and seafood tavern which serves several beers and drinks, such as the Long Island Iced Tea. Items from their menu include soups and sandwiches costing from $4 to $14. It is at 11 S. Main, Hanover (643-4075).

Peter Christian's Tavern

Those interested in good drinks, food and entertainment should try Peter Christian's Tavern. The usual clientele can enjoy musical performances every Thursday night and try Open Mike Night Fridays. They serve a varied foods and have a bar. Lunch items cost $4 to $6 and dinners are $7 to $9. It is at 39 S. Main, Hanover (643-2345).
