Women's basketball splits weekend pair

The Dartmouth women's basketball team took to the road this weekend, playing the Princeton Tigers and the University of Pennsylvania Quakers. After a disappointing 76-64 loss to Princeton Friday night in New Jersey, the team rose to the occasion on Saturday and defeated Penn, 79-55.

Although Dartmouth did not beat the Tigers, several players stood out.

Sophomore guard Sally Annis, who was previously named to the All-Tourney team at the Landmark Bank Women's Classic at Dartmouth and the Buckeye Classic in Ohio, tallied an impressive 22 points for the Big Green. Co-captain Ilsa Webeck '95 ripped down nine rebounds.

Still, the team could not secure the win. "After playing Princeton, I felt really angry," said co-Captain Brandi Jones '95. "Coach told us to let it go, and instead concentrate on the upcoming Pennsylvania game. I honestly think that we were a brand new team when we came out to play on Saturday."

Looking at the statistics, it might very well have been a new team.

With the offensive mentality back, the Big Green kept on scoring. Jones tallied 11 points in the first six minutes, which got the ball rolling for the rest of the game.

"In the past three games we've had, we didn't start off shooting well" said Jones. "It got us down and we couldn't get our shooting mentality back. At Penn, our shots were falling, and that really changed the mentality on the court."

Annis had another stellar game, racking up 17 points, for a weekend total of 39. Webeck had 12 points, while senior forward Laurie Stucker grabbed eight rebounds.

As if the scoring wasn't enough, senior co-Captain Betsy Gilmore dished out six assists, tying the all-time Dartmouth assist record previously held by Sophia Neely '91.

After breaking a three-game losing streak, the women's basketball team is ready to fight again. Tomorrow night the Big Green play Boston University, now 6-2, at 7 p.m. in Leede Arena.

It will be the first home game since the Landmark Classic, which took place on Dec. 29th and 30th.

In the Classic, Dartmouth defeated Lafayette in the first round, but fell to Wisconsin-Green Bay in the Championship game. The women hope to make a successful comeback tomorrow night against Boston University and continue their winning streak.

"Today and tomorrow we'll be gearing up to play BU" said Jones. "We have a win under our belt and it should be a good game."
