Nichols out in final round

Running out of all the right questions, Government Professor Tom Nichols said he played his last game of "Jeopardy!"

"I'm turning in my jersey," he said.

His Oct. 11 performance on the game show, which was televised last night, was a heartbreaker.

Nichols managed to recover from a relatively slow start in the Tournament of Champions game, which included categories ranging from "World Facts," to"Black America" to "Law and Government."

Nichols led by $1,000 going into the Final Jeopardy section of the program, but ended up losing by betting too much on the question, which all three participants answered incorrectly.

Nichols said the correct answer to the Final Jeopardy question ("The last king of the Hellenes, he was the second to bear this name") popped into his head, but, rather than writing "Constantine II," the right answer, Nichols wrote "Alexander II."

Nichols finished his run on the show with nearly $59,000 in winnings, he said. His tournament loss was not completely fruitless -- Nichols did win a number of consolation prizes, including a salad shooter, a watch and shampoo.
