Carnival tomorrow

The Programming Board will sponsor this year's Summer Carnival tomorrow from 1 p.m. to 4 on the Green.

With the way this summer has been going, the event's title, "Hot and Sticky" is appropriate enough.

Since the start of the term, the Programming Board's Summer Carnival Committee has been planning the event. There will be booths and events &emdash; like bead making, a massage booth and sumo wrestling &emdash; scattered across the Green.

Music will supply the background to "Hot and Sticky" &emdash; the New Nile Orchestra will play polyrhythmic Afro-pop in an Ethiopian language known as Amharic, Student Programs Coordinator Linda Kennedy said.

The leader of the group, Kiflu, is Ethiopian and teaches dance at Middlebury College. Kiflu "takes ancient tunes and ancient dances and the other people in the band sort of adapt them," Kennedy said.

There also will be a Velcro Olympics, where participants wear Velcro suits and race against someone through an obstacle course while avoiding attachment to the course itself.

At the sumo wrestling booth students can throw their bodies &emdash; in a weighted-down sumo-wrestler suit &emdash; against their opponents.

For those artistically inclined, students can make bead jewelry at the Bead-O-Rama booth or contribute to a large graffiti painting.

There will also be a variety of booths &emdash; not all of which will be free &emdash; sponsored by various organizations and Greek houses.

Sigma Delta sorority will have a massage tent. Two years ago, students were fed grapes and cooled with fans in the tent. The event won the best booth award.

Kennedy added there will be a free barbecue and free ice cream.

"It's usually a wonderful party," Kennedy said.

"Hundreds and hundreds of people come. The Programming Board has been doing this long enough now so that they're having some of their favorite things at this Summer Carnival."
