Bus, car collide on 89

A collision between a brand new Ford Thunderbird and a 45-passenger bus forced Vermont State Police to close down Interstate 89's two southbound lanes between Exits 3 and 4 for an hour yesterday afternoon.

No one was injured in the accident said Heidi Holzinger, a Vermont State Police dispatcher. The Thunderbird had received extensive driver-side damage and the bus had front-end damage.

The accident occured at 3:30 p.m. near Bethel, Vt., when the Thunderbird unexpectantly spun sideways in front of the U.S. Express bus headed for Boston, Mass. The bus originated from Montreal, Canada.

Valerie White of Steamspring, Colo. was driving the car. Yves Constant of Springfield, Mass. was driving the bus. Police did not take down passengers' names because no one was injured, Holzinger said.

Drivers were detoured through Route 12 while state workers cleaned up the expressway.
