Amarna elects first officers

John Strayer '96 was elected the first president of Amarna, the College's second undergraduate society, during its meeting Wednesday night. He will become president next term.

Claire Unis '95 will be vice president, Jenny Bentwood '96 treasurer, Chris Duper '96 community service chair, Andrew Smith '94 social chair and Susannah Schlichter '95 membership chair.

Unis said Amarna may rename the executive positions to something "less formal and hierarchical" so all members can feel more involved.

Strayer's main responsibilities are to act as a spokesperson for Amarna and lead weekly meetings.

"I think we've had a good showing in terms of membership," Strayer said. "Next term Amarna will really make an effort to define itself."

Strayer said he joined Amarna because it took the positive aspects of the Greek system and improved upon them. He said he supports Amarna's goals of integrating men and women and of making sure the focus of its social events is not alcohol.

Unis will be responsible for Amarna's programming. "I think that having good, diverse programming is key to Amarna's future success in living up to its constitution so I am definitely excited to take on the challenge," she said.
