The College announced yesterday that Scott Brown has been named Dean of the College. Brown has held the interim dean since August 2021, following the resignation of former Dean of the College Kathryn Lively in June 2021.

On Oct. 24, spaces in Dartmouth Hall will reopen after a 21-month long renovation period that updated its interior with improved accessibility features and eco-friendly modifications that were almost entirely funded by College alumnae. Although faculty began moving into their offices in Dartmouth Hall on Sept. 30 and an official dedication ceremony will be held on Nov. 11, the building will not fully reopen for classes until the start of the winter term.

In his junior year of high school, Joshua Watson ’22 was preparing for a long-awaited trip to scuba dive in Belize when a basketball hit him in the face during a practice with his varsity team, smashing and breaking his nose. Doctors advised him not to go on his trip — which was just days away — until they could schedule his surgery. Watson’s mother, April Morrow, said her son — ever determined and eager for an adventure — forwent treatment to make the trip.

On Monday, co-founder of the Black Panther Party Bobby Seale spoke to a full Filene auditorium in an event co-hosted by the Dartmouth Political Union and the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy. The event, titled “On His Activism and Legacy: Bobby Seale,” was attended by approximately 220 people, with dozens more turned away when the auditorium reached capacity.

President emeritus James Wright, 16th president of the College from 1998 to 2009, died from cancer at his home in Hanover on Monday, College President Phil Hanlon ’77 announced on Tuesday. He was 83.

The College held a community gathering on Baker-Berry lawn on Friday afternoon for students to “grieve in recognition of recent losses and community pain,” according to an email from interim Dean of the College Scott Brown. This event was one of several organized by various members of the Dartmouth community following the deaths of Sam Gawel ’23, Joshua Watson ’22, Alex Simpson ’22 and David Gallagher ’20.

Joshua Watson ’22 died on Aug. 27 in his hometown of Indianapolis, according to a Wednesday email to campus from interim Dean of the College Scott Brown and an online obituary.

At approximately 10:45 p.m. on Saturday evening, an older, white man physically attacked biochemistry Ph.D. candidate Abubakar Khan after having directed racial epithets towards Khan and three other graduate students. Following the incident, the Hanover Police department submitted an alleged hate crime for review to the New Hampshire Department of Justice.

Whether it was through her everyday fashion statements or her remarkable acts of selflessness, Alex Simpson ’22 left an impression on all she touched. Simpson graduated cum laude with a double major in French and Psychology and a minor in Government. Upon her admission to law school, Simpson had planned to work toward prioritizing the needs of pediatric patients and the medical professionals who treat them.

For the first time since 2019, the First-Year Trips program led incoming students through Dartmouth’s traditional outdoor orientation program with minimal COVID-19 restrictions. With four sections and a reinstated overnight component, the entirely student-run program ran smoothly, according to Trips volunteers.

Alexandra “Alex” Simpson died on Saturday from a recurring childhood cancer at age 22, according to an obituary. Simpson, a Kentucky native, graduated cum laude from the College in June and planned on attending law school.

This weekend, members of the Class of 2020 will return to campus for a belated commencement ceremony, allowing them an in-person opportunity to celebrate after graduating virtually two years ago. The event was initially rescheduled to June 2021, but the College postponed festivities again due to COVID-19 concerns, according to vice president for alumni relations Cheryl Bascomb ’82.

Hanover Police received a bomb threat call today directed at the Vail building at the Geisel School of Medicine, according to an email from Safety and Security director Keiselim Montas. The threat targeted a nonexistent room in Vail.
