After hiatus, diversity council reforms

A committee of College administrators tasked with promoting diversity met for the first time in two years early last week. Established in 2001, then revived in 2011, the Diversity Council had planned to release an institution-wide diversity plan by December 2012. The council put the plan on hold following administrative changeover, vice president for institutional diversity and equity and council chair Evelynn Ellis said.

Program will explore Arctic systems

A new program led by Dartmouth environmental studies professor Ross Virginia and University of Alaska Fairbanks professor Michael Sfraga will allow researchers to study the Arctic, potentially exploring topics like energy, water, health and climate change. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Arctic Initiative was created to foster collaboration among Arctic Council member countries on interdisciplinary, policy-related research.

More than 60 dry events draw freshmen to Greek organizations

During the Greek Leadership Council’s six-week freshman ban on Greek events serving alcohol, the GLC sponsored more than 60 events with its $25,000 budget, up from $20,000 last year. In an informal poll of 53 freshmen, 90 percent said they had attended a GLC-sponsored event.

Pilot program emphasizes wellness

This fall, the office of student health promotion and wellness has introduced an eight-week pilot program to explore stress management, diet and sleep habits, among other aspects of health. Called “Thriving@Dartmouth,” the program is open to peer advisors, wellness living learning community residents and those who have been involved in Dartmouth on Purpose. The class has 12 participants.
