Kirsten Stromberg's '94 Senior Fellowship Award exhibition, titled, "Double Diamond Hitch," uses sight and sound, integrating music and art through sound sculpture, and prerecorded electroacoustic sound pickups attached to music.
Meredith Davis vividly displays a disturbing aspect of our society in her installation titled "Family Values" in the Barrow's Rotunda at the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts. Her installation violates our comfort zones by blatantly exposing the horrific side of family life, the domestic and sexual violence that exists in seemingly perfect home settings. From across the Green, the image of children's laundry hung on clotheslines is captivating.
Two talented Dartmouth alumni with a unique grasp of color and design are currently displaying their works as part of thePerspectives on Design Show at the Jaffe-Friede and Strauss Galleries in the Hopkins Center. This year's winners of the Perspectives on Design Contest are Deborah Vogel '94 and Michael Houston '94.
Every year, at the end of the Spring term, studio art senior majors display several selected works at the Jaffe-Friede Gallery at the Hopkins Center. This year's student exhibition, which opened yesterday, comprises works by a strongly talented and innovative group of 20 artists. The pieces currently on display are representative of many months of work in each individual artist's preferred concentration.
After the first song, members of the audience were no longer able to remain still. Several people got out of their seats and swayed and shook, moving their bodies in rhythm with Ani DiFranco's rapid music. Despite her small stature, DiFranco's voice can hit you like a rock.
One of the most fantastic displays of West African art will be taken down from the Hood Museum later this week.
Silent black and white films emphasize the importance of physical motion and facial emotion. These films are an art in themselves, sparkling remnants of the developing film industry. "Lonesome" is a film that has the energy to convey a message without sound.
