College continues search for two administrators

The College has started to sift through applications in its quest to find a new assistant dean of first-year students and a director of public affairs. Dean of First-Year Students Peter Goldsmith said during Winter term, a search committee narrowed the pool of applicants for the assistant dean position to a short list of candidates.

Students receive oratory awards

Monica Oberkofler '96 took first place yesterday afternoon in the annual Barge Oratorical Contest for seniors for her account of how ordinary German men became perpetrators of Nazi war crimes, and Eric Paley '98 won the Class of 1866 Oratorical Contest for sophomores and juniors with his speech encouraging citizens to challenge the injustices arising in America. Both contests, which have been annual events at Dartmouth since the turn of the century, were held in Dartmouth Hall. More than 40 students listened to the orations of seven finalists, who addressed issues ranging from the recent racial incidents that have occurred on campus to how American foreign policy should be developed. Freedman's book hits the bookstores

President of the College James Freedman's new book of essays, "Idealism and Liberal Education," is now on the bookshelves at The Dartmouth Bookstore. The book, much of which Freedman wrote during his sabbatical last year, is an autobiography of Freedman's intellectual career in the world of higher education. The book consists of a collection of essays which are grouped into three sections: Life and Letters, Content and Character in Liberal Education and Models for Shaping a Life. Domenic Calaiacomo, a Dartmouth Bookstore manager, said the book is selling well.

College will seek new Latino Studies professor

In response to the efforts of students and faculty to make Latino Studies a permanent part of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies program, the College will be offering a tenure track Latino Studies position. "We're going for a national search.

First phase of expansion underway

With the demolition of the old Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in September, the College is one step closer to completing the first phase of its northward expansion. The first stage of the expansion plan, scheduled to finish in 2000, includes converting the old hospital into a parking lot, constructing a new psychology building and building the Berry Library extension of Baker Library. By January, most of the rubble from the hospital demolition should be cleared.
