A New Year's in a Rickshaw

Devoid of sparklers, Anderson Cooper and Martinelli’s, New Year’s Eve 2014 was unlike any other for Lisa Luo ’15. Instead of watching the ball drop from the comfort of her living room in Boston, Lisa rang in the new year in a rickshaw hurtling through Beijing’s congested streets. The closed tin box pulled by a guy on a motorcycle made for a strange and claustrophobic celebration of the New Year. Luckily, the rickshaw had one small, plastic window for Lisa to gaze out.

Three years ago I left home, hiking pack on my back and stiff boots on my feet, for my first-year trip. After our first day of hiking, my trip and I arrived at our campsite where we encountered a thru-hiker. His trail name was Lazarus.

This Is Just What I Look Like

You know that person. You pass them on the street, you sit next to them in class, you see them in FoCo. You are scared of them. You have never actually talked to them, and you might not even know their name, but you sense they are an angry creature, possibly without a soul, who hates everyone.

My friends and I slipped into a booth in the back and ordered away: pizza, chicken fingers, sweet potato fries and free water. I was stupefied to find that other students actually went to the physical location. How was this my first time here?
