Swimmers seek 8th win

|

The women's swim team will compete against the Yale Bulldogs this Saturday, coming off another exciting victory against Army. The Big Green brought their winning streak to six, and improved their overall record to 7-3, the best record since the 1978-79 season. Former Olympian Coach Betsy Mitchell called Yale a "perennial powerhouse" in the Ivy League, but she said she is confident the Dartmouth women will give them a tough battle. "The meet will be a hard last challenge for the squad going to Easterns," Mitchell said. Mitchell pointed out that Yale is on the same level as Cornell, whom the Big Green unexpectedly defeated in early January. Swimmers who might turn in strong performances this weekend include Deb Whitney '96 and co-captain Cory Murphy '95, both exceptional swimmers in multiple events. This will be the last home meet for Co-Captain Lisa Cloitre '94. "This could be a really grand finale for Lisa," Mitchell said. "This season has been a huge stepping stone for the Dartmouth women," Cloitre said.

Men swim against Bulldogs

|

The Big Green men's swim team, which has struggled this season, will host Yale on Saturday looking to improve their 1-8 record. The Dartmouth swimmers, who surrendered a tough loss to the Army Cadets last weekend, will fight another battle this weekend when they face the powerhouse Yale Bulldogs. Coach Jim Wilson will challenge Yale for the first time in his coaching career. "Yale is a very strong team, and we're hoping for some very strong individual performances this weekend," he said. Some of this weekend's highlights could come from Bob Halk '94 in the backstroke, Jason Stern '94 in the butterfly, or Ben Lanon '96 in the breaststroke. Wilson said this year has been a rebuilding year for the Big Green.

Sanchez captures U.S. Cross Country title

One has to wonder whether Maribel Sanchez '96 would be the runner that she is today if her parents had not decided to move to Hastings, N.Y. Fate would have it that a young and eager Sanchez would move next door to an avid runner of the same age.

Squash teams face tough competition

|

The men's and women's squash teams may not be winning all their matches, but the scores alone certainly don't tell the whole story. Last weekend in Dartmouth's Berry Racquet Center, both squads were shut out by Princeton, and the men fell 5-4 to University of Pennsylvania.

Swimmers win war

|

The women's swim team raised their record to 7-3 with their sixth straight win against Army on Saturday. The squad won 13 of 16 events to dominate the Bulldogs. Coach Betsy Mitchell said, "The women who have already qualified for Eastern Collegiate Swimming Championships are swimming faster than they ever have at mid-season." "We could be winning meets and swimming poorly and it wouldn't mean anything to me.

Women's hoops splits

If people still doubted that the Dartmouth women's basketball team was for real, they've certainly changed their minds by now. The Big Green emerged from their toughest road swing of the season with an impressive 59-55 defeat of two-time defending Ivy League Champion Brown and a hard-fought 69-65 loss to Yale. The weekend's two-game split upped the Big Green's record to 9-8 overall, and kept them perched atop the Ivy League standings with a 4-1 record. Not bad for a team that was picked to finish 5th in the preseason media poll.
