Last night the bubble burst on the Dartmouth field hockey team. The Big Green (13-4, 5-2 Ivy) were left out of the 16-team field chosen by the NCAA selection committee.
In what could have been a rebuilding year, the DWRC has dominated the Northeast. The point differential between the Big Green and its regular season opponents was 286-22.
In an exhibition precursor to the 2001-2002 campaign, the Dartmouth women's basketball team dropped a thriller, 63-62, to the Galatasaray SK All-Star team from Turkey at Leede Arena last night. After trailing for nearly all of the second half, the Big Green stormed back behind a three-pointer from Keri Downs '03 and eight consecutive free throws from Downs and Katharine Hanks '03 to take the lead late in the game. While trying to preserve a one-point lead, Dartmouth committed a costly turnover with 25 seconds remaining and Galatasaray SK converted the opportunity and made the winning bucket with five ticks left on the clock.

Maybe Columbia should get the Banner Student system. Thanks to a scheduling mistake with the class credits of a defensive tackle on the Columbia football team, the Lions may have to forfeit their two wins this season--including their 27-20 victory over Dartmouth two weeks ago. According to news reports, Matt Stary, a 6-2, 285-pound senior, was declared ineligible this week because of the scheduling blunder.
Coming off of their collegiate debuts last week at the Dartmouth Invitational, the freshman lightweight men and the novice women's crews head down to Derby, Conn., this weekend for the annual Yale Invitational. Known as the Demolition at Derby, this three-mile head race marks the first time in which the '05s will row their way into enemy territory. Yale's crews, which have been practicing on the water since late August, are sure to provide the Big Green with all it can handle, as the Bulldogs appear to be the top competition for this event. While the freshman lights and novice women head down I-91 to the Nutmeg State, the heavyweight crews--both freshman and varsity--will face off against the Huskies of Northeastern here in Hanover tomorrow. Scheduled for a 1 p.m.
