X-Country battles rain and cold to take 10th in Boston

The Big Green cross country teams ran through mud, rain and cold, gritting their way through a crowded field as both the men's and women's second varsity teams took 10th overall Sunday at the Mayor's Cup races in Boston's Franklin Park. The men were 10th out of 18 teams in the open race, led by Grant Allen '08, who finished 65th overall in a field of roughly 200 and 42nd among team-affiliated runners, traversing the eight-kilometer course in 26:38. Andrew Han '09 came across next for Dartmouth, 51st for scoring and 77th overall with a time of 26:58. Completing the scoring for the men were Steve Durham '09, Hari Iyer '09 and Mark Brissette '06, who finished 56th (85th overall) in 27:13, 59th (89th overall) in 27:16 and 60th (92nd overall) in 27:19, respectively. Both teams had difficulty turning in fast times due to massive amounts of rain muddying and flooding the course.

Football gives the fans what they want

There is no doubt that alumni who can easily recall the glory days of Dartmouth football, either during the early 1990s or even as far back as the mid-20th century, when the Big Green footballers reached their national peak, have viewed the past eight seasons with disdain.

Women's volleyball splits Ivy League matches at home

The Big Green volleyball team returned to its early season form this weekend, posting a strong effort against powerhouse Cornell and cruising to a three-game sweep against Columbia. The two home matches end the team's three-week road swing, and Saturday's win over Columbia marks the end of a five-match losing slide. Dartmouth (10-8, Ivy 3-5) entered the weekend's play coming off of a pair of painful losses, losing a heartbreaking five-game marathon to Brown and a hapless sweep at the hands of Yale. On Friday night, the Big Green lost their match to Cornell (14-3, Ivy 7-0), but showed a poise that could come in handy during the rest of the season. After the Big Red claimed the first two games of the match by convincing margins (30-23, 30-21), Dartmouth battled back.
