Softball wraps up encouraging season with third-place Ivy finish

Rain Tuesday morning led to the cancellation of the last softball game of the season -- a fitting end for a season marked by unexpected events. The Big Green's spring season was plagued by injuries, had surprising wins and disappointing losses, all en route to a satisfying third place Ivy League finish and a 14-22 overall record. The season started very slowly for the team.

Softball splits New York trip, stops five-game skid

Jennie Post / The Dartmouth Staff Dartmouth softball opened Ivy League play over the weekend by splitting doubleheaders against the Cornell Big Red and Columbia Lions. Dartmouth (9-16, 2-2 Ivy) captured a 4-3 win in its second game against Cornell (17-16, 3-1 Ivy), halting a losing streak that had stretched to five games after falling to the Big Red 3-2 in extra innings earlier in the day. The Big Green ground out another split against the Columbia Lions (18-15-1, 1-1 Ivy), losing the first game 3-1 and winning the second 5-2. Saturday and Sunday's games were not only eagerly anticipated as the commencement of Ivy competition, but were also a watershed in the team's season.

Women's soccer wins, claims first in the Ivy League

The Dartmouth women's soccer team traveled to Cambridge Saturday to face off against Harvard as part of its chase for first place in the Ivy League. Everything fell Dartmouth's way and with a 1-0 win over Harvard and a loss by Yale at the hands of Columbia, the Big Green claimed the top spot in the Ivy League and improved to 11-3-1 (4-1 Ivy). The win, besides catapulting Dartmouth past Yale into first place, was the team's fourth straight shutout and the team has gone unbeaten in its last six matches. Christina Ferraris '06 tallied the only goal of the match in the 72nd minute, giving Dartmouth all it needed for the win.
