Women's basketball faces tough foes, preps for league play

Tilman Dette / The Dartmouth Senior Staff The Dartmouth women's basketball team found wins hard to come by over the holiday season, but the team's play improved during late December as the Big Green women look to translate the experiences from the non-conference slate into Ivy League success. The team played tough against several NCAA tournament-caliber teams, a feat made even more impressive when considering that the team had a full month between home contests. Co-captain Kristen Kraft '08 sees the non-conference winter break schedule as a way to prepare for Ivy League play by facing tough non-conference opponents. "I believe we grew as a team over break," Kraft said.

Freshman rowers head south, varsity serves self-sanction

While over 50 freshmen rowers from the men's and women's heavyweight and lightweight teams trained for over a week in Miami this winter break, the varsity teams were kept in Hanover for training after a self-imposed sanction. The reason behind the upperclassmen's exclusion from the trip to Miami was not entirely clear to the freshmen.

Women's hockey sweeps through Union and Rennselaer

Jessica Griffen / The Dartmouth Staff After a tough loss to Harvard last week, the women's hockey team went on to sweep its weekend games against Union (1-13-0, 0-6-0 ECACHL) and Rennselaer (6-7-2, 1-4-1 ECACHL), improving its overall record to 9-2-1, 7-2-0 ECACHL. Harvard squeaked away last Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over the Big Green at home.

Alex Barnett '09 once again led his team in scoring with 14 points.

Men's basketball's win streak stopped at two by Stony Brook

Jennie Post / The Dartmouth Staff Clutch shooting and ball control were key themes that helped propel the Big Green to its two game-winning streak going into last Saturday's game at Stony Brook (1-6). However, this time Dartmouth had trouble shooting the ball all night and could not take care of the basketball, losing control of the game early and falling, 70-43. Dartmouth slipped to 3-4 on the season while Stony Brook earned its first win of the year. Forward Alex Barnett '09 led the Big Green as the only player to score in double digits with 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting and seven rebounds.
