Women's Soccer Falls to Tigers,1-0

|

Big Green women's soccer was unable to find the back of the net during the Big Green's 1-0 loss to Princeton Saturday afternoon in Princeton, N.J. Princeton (6-1-1, 2-0 Ivy) jumped on the board in the 32nd minute with a rocket from Sarah Peteraf from 25 yards out that beat Dartmouth goalkeeper Laurel Peak '09 to the back of the net. The Big Green dropped its second game this season by a score of 1-0 to an Ivy League opponent.

Men's Soccer Ties Princeton in Ivy Opener

|

In its first Ivy League match of the season, the Big Green men's soccer team drew a 1-1 overtime tie against Princeton in the Tigers' stadium debut in Princeton, N.J. The tie moved the Big Green to 5-2-1 (0-0-1 Ivy), while the Tigers are now 2-6-1 (0-0-1 Ivy). "I think Princeton will be happier with the outcome than we will," head coach Jeff Cook said.

Toe to Toe: Karr Vs. Schmidley (Schmidley)

|

Last week, Ryan and I took our respective shots at predicting this year's BCS title game-winner. Making such a prediction, particularly in light of the fact that the 2008 college football season was and is now shaping up to be just as, if not more, volatile than last year's season, seemed to be a near impossible task. Between the politics of the polls, the complexity and sometimes surprising results of the oft-maligned BCS, the confounding early season upsets and blowouts and the lack of a dominant head-hancho (or two) at the top of the polls, there's just too much uncertainty to dub one squad the team of destiny with any reasonable degree of certainty.

Men run to first, women fifth place at Maine meet

|

In a tune-up to next week's New England Championships, the Dartmouth men's and women's cross-country teams finished first and fifth, respectively, at the Murray Keatinge Invitational, hosted by the University of Maine on Saturday in Orono, Maine. The Big Green men had 10 finishers among the top 24, and finished with 28 points to beat out the field of eight teams, which included Yale and the University of New Hampshire. Two-time Ivy League cross-country champion and All-American Ben True '08 won the five-mile race with a time of 23:57, nearly a minute faster than the next finisher.

Field hockey rides hot start to beat Penn, 3-2, for second-straight Ivy win

|

After scoring just two minutes into the game and playing a strong first half, Dartmouth field hockey withstood a late University of Pennsylvania surge to beat the Quakers, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Hanover. The victory gives Dartmouth (2-6, 2-1 Ivy) its second straight Ivy League win, while Penn (2-8, 1-2 Ivy) has lost eight out its last nine contests. Co-captain Ashley Hines '09 commented that while the game certainly showed marked progress, the team still has some work to do. "Each game we've seemed to be playing a more complete game," Hines said.

Volleyball falls again to rival Harvard in straight sets

|

Struggling with team inconsistencies and individual injuries, the Dartmouth volleyball team missed a chance at redemption against division rival Harvard on Friday night, falling in straight sets, 25-12, 25-15, 25-21. Having lost two of three matches during last week's Dartmouth Invitational, including a 4-1 defeat by Harvard (7-7, 2-0 Ivy), the Big Green (4-8, 0-2 Ivy) sought to regain its momentum against a streaking Crimson squad that had won five straight coming into Friday's match. "[Harvard] played at a faster pace than they did last time," head coach Ann Marie Larese said.

Stephen Greif '11 partnered with classmate David Fink '11 to win in doubles on Friday, before downing Fink in the H flight singles final on Saturday.

Defense shows improvement as Quakers beat football

|

Dartmouth football lost its first game of the Ivy League schedule Saturday, falling to the University of Pennsylvania, 23-10, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The game was highlighted by some good but extremely inconsistent play for Dartmouth (0-3, 0-1 Ivy). The defense seems to have fixed a number of their problems since last week's 42-6 blowout loss to University of New Hampshire, as the Big Green held Penn's (1-2, 1-0 Ivy) running attack Saturday to under 10 yards rushing in the first half while intercepting the ball twice and recovering a fumble over the course of the game. Unfortunately, the Big Green offense had all sorts of problems getting it going on Saturday, rushing for just five net yards on 23 attempts.

Scott drops first round match of All-American tournament

|

Leaving the rain in Hanover behind for California sunshine, Dartmouth women's tennis player Molly Scott '11 could not enjoy the West Coast for long, as she lost her opening match Saturday in the prequalifying draw of the 2008 Riviera-Intercolleigate Tennis Association Women's All-American championship hosted by Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. Scott, unseeded in the prequalfying draw, bowed out of the tournament in a three-set loss to fourth-seeded Tinesta Rowe of Fresno State, 6-4, 1-6, 4-6. The turning point of the match came when Rowe battled back from a first-set loss to dominate the second set.

Field hockey drops match to Holy Cross, 3-2, despite early lead

Despite catching the Crusaders off guard with a goal within the first minute of play, Dartmouth field hockey could not maintain its early advantage as the Big Green fell to Holy Cross, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in Hanover. Just 47 seconds into the game, Rebecca Sobel '11 broke open the scoring for Dartmouth (1-6, 1-1 Ivy), guiding the ball into the back of the net on a tip and claiming her second goal of the season. The positive start seemed to add to the Big Green's rising momentum set off by the team's first win of the season against Brown on Saturday. Dartmouth continued to pressure Holy Cross (3-5, 0-0 Patriot League) and keep the ball in the Crusader half of the field during the opening period.
