Men's basketball drops key weekend games

Sophie Novack / The Dartmouth Staff Sophie Novack / The Dartmouth Staff Mired in a season-long slump, the Dartmouth men's basketball team failed to notch two important victories this past weekend, suffering a tough 55-45 loss to Yale University on Friday and a 76-57 loss to Brown University on Saturday. In the game against the Bulldogs (11-18, 5-7 Ivy), the Big Green (5-21, 1-11 Ivy) shot an abysmal 25 percent from the field easily the team's season-worst shooting performance.

When I started writing this column, I swore to myself that I wouldn't fall into the same trap as some of the previous sports columnists for The Dartmouth who focused on random things jokes about 1990s sports movies and B-side analyses of pro sports.

Skiing finishes season undefeated with win over Catamounts

|

Tilman Dette / The Dartmouth Senior Staff Tilman Dette / The Dartmouth Senior Staff Taking control of its final carnival of the season, the Dartmouth ski team finished a second consecutive undefeated season, winning the Middlebury Carnival with 846 points. The last carnival also doubled as the Eastern Championships, which Dartmouth has now won for the past four years. The University of Vermont again trailed in second with 806 points reminiscent of all of the Big Green's other carnivals this season. "[Vermont] traditionally has had a strong skiing program and has won the NCAA [Championships] a number of times over the years," women's Nordic head coach Cami Thompson said.

Eagles outlast Big Green in ‘hostile' men's tennis match

|

After securing the doubles point, the Dartmouth men's tennis team dropped the top four singles spots to Boston College on Tuesday, ultimately losing 3-4. Alex Centenari '13 and Chris Ho '12 closed off the match with individual victories, but the wins were not enough to help the Big Green (6-3, 0-0 Ivy) overcome the Eagles (4-5, 0-4 ACC) in what the players deemed a "hostile" match. "We fought hard but we weren't able to pull through," Michael Laser '12 said.

Dartmouth swimming prepares for Ivy meet

|

The Dartmouth men's and women's swimming and diving teams are looking to end their seasons on a high note at the Ivy League Championships. The men (3-8, 0-7 Ivy) finished in last place at the meet last year, while the women (2-11, 0-7 Ivy) edged out Brown University in the last few races to take sixth place overall. "Last year's performance at Ivies was probably the highlight of my career at that point," women's co-captain Catherine Armstrong '10 said. The men's team is ranked eighth in the league, but has its eyes set on finally beating Brown the team it narrowly lost to last year. "To finally be able to [beat Brown] would be a great finish to my and [co-captain] Cary [Stathopoulos '10]'s careers," men's co-captain Scott Sorensen '10 said. Stathopoulos and Sorensen are the only seniors on the men's team, while the women have four seniors Armstrong, women's co-captain Carolyn Rippe '10, Kathleen Brady '10 and Kelly O'Callaghan '10. To prepare itself physically, the team has been having shorter practices and is focusing on more race-oriented drills that allow the swimmers to concentrate on the details of each event, he said. "Historically, we've been a team that tapers really well," Sorensen said.

Track teams make final preparations for upcoming Heps

Tilman Dette / The Dartmouth Senior Staff Tilman Dette / The Dartmouth Senior Staff After mixed results this Winter for both of Dartmouth's track and field teams, the men and women will finish up their seasons this weekend hosting the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. The women have seen success from co-captain Natalie Stoll '10 in both the 400-meter dash and 500-meter race, in which she is ranked ninth and sixth, respectively, in the Ivies. "It's really exciting for us to get to compete against the other Ivies on our home track," Stoll said.
