Men’s lacrosse returns home to face Cornell

|

The men’s lacrosse team returns to Hanover for its home opener against No. 2 Cornell University this Saturday at Scully-Fahey Field. Last season, the Big Green fell 21-5 to the Big Red in Ithaca. In its first Ivy League game, the Big Green (1-4, 0-1 Ivy) fell to Harvard University 16-7, largely thanks to a 7-1 second quarter for the Crimson.

Men’s tennis team goes 2-1 in Va.

The men’s tennis team traveled to Virginia over spring break, where it went 2-1 against three nonconference opponents. Dartmouth picked up convincing victories against The College of William and Mary and Old Dominion University. The Big Green, which entered the trip ranked 34 in the country suffered a painful loss against No. 36 Virginia Commonwealth University.

Chaw ’17 shines at bat in early softball season

|

Every time she steps up to the plate, Karen Chaw ’17 performs the same small routine. “Measure out the plate, twirl my bat a little, swing and hope I hit,” she said. Chaw said she puts on “a game face” to hide any worries from the pitcher, and focuses intently on hitting the ball. Whatever it is, it seems to be working. As one of just two players to start all 23 games this season, Chaw is tied for the lead in home runs and is the outright leader in RBI.

Crew teams impacted by icy weather on return to Hanover

|

The heavyweight crew team piled on a bus for its annual 1,000-mile trip to Oak Ridge, Tenn., this spring interim, escaping Hanover’s icy weather to row on a flat 2,000-meter course for five hours every day. The Oak Ridge course, heavyweight co-captain Stuart Maeder ’15 said, is one of the best in the country. And Dartmouth’s quarter system meant the Big Green crew team had the water to itself for much of the trip. Yet upon its return to the College, the team found a challenge waiting. As winter lingers in Hanover, the Connecticut River remains frozen. Despite the potential setback, John Strizich ’14 said that the team remains undeterred.

D’Agostino shines as track teams succeed at NCAAs

|

Abbey D’Agostino ’14 made history at the NCAA Division I Indoor National Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., becoming the first woman in Division I history to win the 3,000-meter race and 5,000-meter race national titles indoor in back-to-back years. As a result she was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association 2014 Women’s Division I Indoor National Track Athlete of the Year, an honor she received in 2013 and in the fall cross-country season.

1-on-1

This week, I sat down with Nick Ruppert ’16 of the baseball team. Nick missed almost all of last season with a broken hand, but has returned strong and has earned the starting job in center field for the Big Green. The team posted a 2-7 record during its nine-game road trip over spring break. It played tough opponents in the Midwest, facing off against the No. 27 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs, the University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks and the No. 18 University of Kansas Jayhawks, as of the latest College Baseball poll.

For varsity athletes, spring break means one thing: training trips. Since we are looking to beat varsity athletes, Austin and I figured we should go on training trips of our own. With teammwork taken care of, we struck out on our own paths to prepare physically, mentally and, most importantly, emotionally for the upcoming spring (which won’t likely arrive until Derby or Green Key, unless College President Phil Hanlon sold his soul for a sunny Dimensions weekend).

Baseball takes on Big XII competition during spring trip

The baseball team challenged itself over spring interim when it traveled down south to two Big 12 diamonds in Forth Worth, Texas and Lawrence, Kan., to play Texas Christian University, the University of Nebraska-Omaha and the University of Kansas. According to Collegiate Baseball rankings, TCU and Kansas are ranked 27 and 18 in the nation, respectively.

Postgrad Puck

Transitioning from the Toronto Furies to the Brampton Thunder was not easy. I was joining a new team with new coaches and players who had already played together for a good part of the season. I was once again a new player fighting for a spot on the team that already had six defenders. Although the team welcomed me with open arms, there was naturally some tension.

Men’s hockey opens playoffs at RPI

Big Green goaltender Charles Grant ’16 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute forward Ryan Haggerty control their teams’ postseason fates. As the two teams prepare to face off this weekend in the first round of the ECAC men’s hockey tournament, all eyes will be them in one of the key matchups of the series.
