Toe to Toe: Knapp vs. Rose (Rose)

Toe to Toe: Knapp vs. Rose (Knapp)
Spring has sprung. As I write this column, which Jordan and I decided would serve to both to gain valuable facetime for our respective sports, as well as to preview the NCAA basketball championships, I am sitting on a bus driving back from our first race of the season.
Crew finishes weekend with near-perfect results
Maggie Goldstein / The Dartmouth Staff Both the Big Green men's heavyweight and women's crews swept their races this weekend during their first regattas of the year. The men's lightweight crew began the season by capturing victories in three out of their four races against the University of Delaware this weekend. The Big Green women's squad overcame difficult racing conditions during Saturday's regatta, topping Northeastern University, the University of Rhode Island and Boston College. The Dartmouth women's varsity eight clocked in at 7:38.7, just ahead of Northeastern, who finished in 7:43.7. Battling strong headwinds and plowing through white caps, the Big Green women established a half-length lead at the settle, and a full-length lead by the 500-meter mark. The morning's choppy waters and 20 miles per hour gusts made for a rough first 500 meters, according to captain Kate Harney '09, although the squads adapted to the conditions. "For rowing, wind is an important factor," she said.

Trauma from infant siblings' death lasts for life, study finds
The memory of an infant sibling dying in a neonatal intensive care unit significantly affects older siblings for the rest of their lives, according to a recent study published in The Journal of Pediatrics by researchers at Dartmouth Medical School. The study's authors, DMS professors Joanna Fanos, George Little and William Edwards, drew their research from interviews with 13 adults and one adolescent whose siblings died in infancy at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center between 1980 and 1990. According to the study, six participants reported "veiled" or secretive family communication, seven gave accounts of parents' ongoing grief and 11 reported high degrees of anxiety, particularly concerning pregnancy and their mothers' well being. Siblings of deceased infants often experience depression, anger, guilt and helplessness, the study found.
