Earlier this month, the annual NCAA men's basketball tournament concluded with the crowning of the North Carolina Tar Heels, after the Michigan State Spartans failed to show up for the game, presumably because they were caught in the traffic produced by Detroit's bustling auto industry... or something.

Men's, women's track and field teams take first at home

|

The Big Green men's and women's track teams defended their home territory this weekend, taking down all opposition at the Dartmouth Outdoor Invitational. The women's final score of 194 points placed them significantly above both the second- and third-place teams, the University of New Hampshire and Middlebury College, who posted 127.5 and 84 points, respectively.

Trailing UVM in the eighth inning, the Big Green was able to take back the lead after a pinch-hit from Brett Gardner '10.

Baseball squeaks by Vermont in the eighth to win 13-10

|

Chris Parker / The Dartmouth Staff A clutch pinch-hit single off the bat of Brett Gardner '10 gave the Dartmouth baseball team a winning boost in its 13-10 victory over the University of Vermont on Tuesday in Burlington, Vt. Down two strikes in the eighth inning with men on first and second, Gardner helped Dartmouth (20-11, 14-2 Ivy) take an 11-10 lead from which UVM (10-22, 3-5 America East) would not recover. Dartmouth entered the eighth inning trailing Vermont 10-9, and then tied the game at 10 off of singles from Jake Carlson '12 and Ray Allen '09. After leading for most of the game, the Big Green was forced to manufacture a comeback after pitcher Max Langford '12 gave up four runs in the seventh inning.

SA pres. campaign tactics varied

|

This year's candidates for student body president all chose to employ traditional campaign tactics -- including the creation of Facebook groups, posters and chalking -- but, despite superficial similarities, each candidate's campaign teams differed in both size and philosophy, and achieved varied results throughout the campaign period. Student Body President-elect Frances Vernon '10 sought to personalize her campaign through individual conversations and avoided mass e-mails, employing a "classic model of campaigning," she said.

Alleged adult film reps. solicit female on Green

|

Correction appended Two men claiming to be representatives of Girls Gone Wild, a video franchise promoting female exhibitionism, approached a sorority member wearing clothing displaying her sorority's name on the Green and requested an interview on Tuesday, according to director of Safety and Security Harry Kinne. Kinne said Safety and Security has not confirmed whether the two men are affiliated with Girls Gone Wild. A Dartmouth student and sorority member was approached by the two men, who told her they were looking for attractive girls to interview, according to an e-mail sent to members of Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority from Megan Fallon, assistant director of the Center for Woman and Gender and the sorority's adviser.

AS SEEN ON: "Greek" takes on college complexities

|

I've often wondered what a television series about Dartmouth students might look like. I suspect that athletes and hippie artists would be depicted in one-dimensional stereotypes, while Dartmouth Outing Club members and politician types might be drawn with more complexity. Members of Greek organizations, however, are perhaps most likely to be portrayed with broad-stroke oversimplifications.

"Hang one, warn a thousand" says the ancient Chinese proverb. In its April meeting, the Dartmouth Board of Trustees hanged Todd Zywicki '88, thus warning the petition trustees -- and any others tempted to express independent views -- not to cross the party line.
