AS SEEN ON: The sympathetic serial killer

Serial killers have captured the fears of film and television audiences for decades. From Alfred Hitchcock's legendary 1960 thriller "Psycho" to director Jonathan Demme's 1991 rendering of the infamous cannibal Hannibal Lector in "Silence of the Lambs," serial killers have been prime source material for writers and directors looking to explore humans' potential for evil. Showtime's drama "Dexter," which will enter its fifth season this Sunday, Sept.

Despite being advertised as this summer's refreshingly romantic, feel-good movie, Nanette Burstein's "Going the Distance" begins and ends like a typical New York City romantic comedy: guy gets dumped, goes to a bar to drink his sorrows, meets a pretty new girl and falls in love.

N.Y. directors discuss theater works

In two installations of the 18th annual New York Theatre Workshop, New York playwrights Deen and Joan Vail Thorne will present their original works, "Draw the Circle" and "The Anatomy of a Female Pope," which will address current issues pertaining to preconceived conventions about gender. The Workshop, which presents two plays every Saturday during its residency, is a three-week program that allows artists to work on special projects and their performance techniques as a break from the bustling city atmosphere. As a transgendered man and performer, Deen has used drama to process the great changes and challenges that have happened in is life.
