Not Just the Flu: Dartmouth’s High-Risk Population and the Pandemic

(02/16/22 7:25am)

A notable event of this winter term was Dartmouth’s decision to begin treating COVID-19 as an endemic disease rather than a pandemic one. In comparison to many peer institutions, classes, clubs and sports at Dartmouth have proceeded relatively unchanged, and the reaction of the student body seems to have been largely positive, in no small part due to the high vaccination rates and low risk to the young adult population.

Editors’ Note

(02/16/22 7:00am)

Well, we’ve had quite the turbulent start to the week, haven’t we? Whether you spent your Sunday rooting for a football team, Maddy from “Euphoria” or for Kanye West to log off of Instagram, there certainly was a lot of tension. And nothing helps ease tension quite like roses, Hallmark cards and overpriced chocolate. While the shift from a night of conflict to one of romance was jarring, it was not as startling as the weather, which somehow dipped from 50 degrees to –7 in the span of three days.

Swiper Stop Swiping: Novack’s Anti-Stealing Initiative

(02/16/22 7:25am)

Dartmouth is a funny place. We can leave our laptops unattended for hours in the library, with confidence that it will remain untouched. Yet, once we walk down the stairs to Novack Cafe, granola bars, sushi and drinks are all fair game to be taken. Even when it comes to stealing, Dartmouth still prides itself on community.

Taking the Plunge

(02/16/22 7:10am)

In relative terms, this year’s plunge should have been easy: more of a Baltic Plunge, as was evidenced by the dripping, increasingly unwieldy ice sculptures lining the path of my long, still-anxious walk from Collis to the point of no return. In Dartmouth winter terms, our Friday plunge happened on a balmy, 45 degree day — so balmy it inspired me and others to don flip flops and t-shirts. I had volunteered at the Mirror section’s previous week’s meeting on a whim — in the fullest capacity of the word — to brave Occom’s icy depths for the sake of journalism. I was now fairly pleased by the ski-day-ruining weather that had spoiled my mood all week. At last, the day of atonement for my past arrogance (“it’s just water! It’ll be fine!”) had arrived, and the warmish weather provided only a slight psychological boost.

College receives community input in presidential search

(02/15/22 10:10am)

The chairs of the College’s presidential search committee hosted three listening sessions for staff, faculty and students to discuss the criteria for Dartmouth’s next president on Feb. 10. College President Phil Hanlon announced his plans to step down in June 2023 in an email to the Dartmouth community at the end of last month.

Rocky hosts virtual ‘Julian Assange: Visionary or Villain?’ event

(02/15/22 10:00am)

On Feb. 9, the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy hosted a virtual Zoom webinar titled: “Julian Assange: Visionary or Villain?” The event featured president of The Markup — an online news outlet with a focus on technology — and leading free speech attorney Nabiha Syed, and was hosted by English and women’s, gender and sexuality studies professor Alexis Jetter.

Hanover restaurants grapple with rising costs due to inflation

(02/15/22 10:05am)

On Feb. 10, the United States Department of Labor reported an inflation rate of 7.5% on an annual basis, a figure that was largely out of line with the Federal Reserve’s target rate of 2% and the highest recorded since 1982. Hanover businesses have been impacted by the rising operation costs, and business owners are taking different measures to adapt to price increases.

Ski team takes second place at first Dartmouth Carnival in three years

(02/14/22 7:10am)

This weekend, the Dartmouth ski team took to the slopes and trails to compete in the Dartmouth Carnival right here in Hanover and Lyme. The Big Green placed second in its only home carnival of the season with 797 points, just edging out the University of New Hampshire’s 796 points but falling short of the University of Vermont’s 951 points. The Big Green has placed second in each of the team’s four carnivals this season.
