To the Editor:
I thought for more than a moment that it was the joke issue of The Dartmouth. But Jen Taylor's comprehensive article, "Architects Present Proposals" (8/19/99), was all too real.
Being 'off' this term, and spending a few weeks here at home in Hawaii, I heard of the unfortunate events surrounding the planning of a 'Hawaiian party' through the grapevine. I am saddened that the organizers had to undergo such harsh accusations.
Seven Dartmouth students will fly to the Marshall Islands this winter to teach in the local public schools through an internship program sponsored by the education department.
At its annual retreat at the College's Minary Conference Center, the Board of Trustees was briefed about the progress of the steering committee but made no decisions about the Social and Residential Life Initiative and did not alter the Initiative's timetable.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions." According to Tuesday's The Dartmouth, "most people on campus" felt that the lu'au party was not offensive, or intended to be. After asking 20 people, I wonder how that conclusion can be made.
The problems with the luau party protests were very well explained by Chris Relyea ' 01 and Mark Hill '00 in their Tuesday editorials. However, what bothers me most is the totally gutless reaction of Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity, Delta Delta Delta sorority, and the Coed Fraternity Sorority Council. While most of their respective membership -- and the campus for that matter -- disagreed with the protests of Omar Rashid '00 and Aaron Akamu '01, these organizations completely gave in to the protesters and conceded the party was indeed offensive.
Students at the College who are working on Republican presidential campaigns have mixed reactions to the recent developments that have thinned out their party's primary race.
The Trustees will convene this weekend for their annual August retreat at the College's Minary Conference Center on Squam Lake in Holderness, N.H.
The Centerbrook architects, who will draft the plans for new social and recreational facilities to meet the goals of the Trustee Initiative, met yesterday and Tuesday in the Tindle Lounge of the Thayer dining hall to introduce options to the College community.
When it comes to Jazz musicians, Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band know their stuff.
Upon graduating Dartmouth, and learning about all the sensitivities of every group represented at Dartmouth, I decided to throw a party. At first I was going to set up a pong table and invite some friends over, but that would be offensive to the world renowned ping-pong-playing Chinese who would be associated with beer consumption.
Thursday night (or I should say Friday morning), I was on my way to the golf course to watch the meteor shower when I bumped into some friends. The first thing they spoke to me about was the controversial luau party.
