The Dartmouth

Reaction piece was example of biased journalism

To the Editor:

I can't explain how amazed I was at the completely biased nature of the article in the last edition of The Dartmouth titled "Most say luau party is not offensive." Not only was is it irresponsible to print something so one-sided, it seemed to be very uninterested in truly reflecting the diversity of student opinion on the subject. I question the author's sample pool and more specifically her intentions in writing the article. Perhaps it would have been more appropriately titled "Students attack Omar Rashid" since the article spent its entirety discussing how "inappropriate" his actions were.

It might have been more informative to discuss his reasons and why Lambda Upsilon Lambda felt that their principles and charter were violated by being held in association with fraternities and councils who hold or condone such parties. While he may have been unwilling to give The D an interview, his blitz is in wide circulation. Rashid and Aaron Akamu are not the only students with strong opposition to the luau party and the author should have made an attempt to represent students with varying opinions or at least used a larger sample pool. I would never be naive enough to say that in general the media is unbiased, but this article is an example of irresponsible, biased journalism at its best.

Correction note: The Dartmouth originally credited this letter to the editor to Jessica Meed '00 incorrectly. The actual author is Jessica Marshall '01.
